Its most likely why the series sucked a fair bit. Movies do generally have a lot better animation and take a lot more effort. It was only the monstrosity that was Endless Eight that was bad anyway wan't it? Sighs I thought was back on form.

I look forward to it with naive hope.

I would hate to think that the haruhi franchise will be remembered as a failed attempt at awesome...

better that it be remembered as awesome, if screwed over with EE.

I'm "meh" on this right now. It could be good... but considering KyoAni has never made a film before, and also how badly they screwed up Endless Eight, there's more than a fair chance it will be bad.

Cautiously Optimistic is the term I am going to use. I am looking forward to it.

Those are OVAs, not films.

I'm interested to see how this pans out, as honestly, it could go either way. However the thing I'm interested in the most is how they're going to appeal to the "newcomers" to the series, so in some sense it could be used as an introduction to the series and not just a very long episode (sort of like Serenity, which was fairly easy to grasp to begin with, whilst HS isn't). As to content I think they could cover most, if not all the within a reasonable time frame (I'm guessing it's going to be an hour and a half to two hours in length).

Thus if it's done well it could may as well stand by itself as a movie, but if it's done badly, well... there's always the novels, right?

Put them both together and you've got a feature length OVA or, in common terms, a film. I'm pretty sure they've enough expertise to put a film together. They'll most likely go about it the same way they did Melancholy or Sighs (more Sighs considering the episodes followed on perfectly). If they don't mess up the story (which they've yet to do so far... EE was just repeating it over and over) it'll be good. I can't see how they can balls anything up by sticking to the book.

There is a very good chance that this movie will be what we have been waiting for, except not (sadly) in series form. Series last weeks, giving plenty of time for deliberation between episodes, whereas this feature length whatever will be all over and done with in two hours.

And thats a problem because? I watched the first series over 2 days (or even a day maybe, I don't remember...). It'll be like that for us who don't get it at cinemas and stuff, only without the theme song every 20 minutes. I think its a good thing to be honest. I usually watch series after they've been out for a while, so no deliberation between episodes for me anyway.

i must admit, I've always preferred series's over movies. you know, length and all.

but i am however quite exited about this for, it being a movie, i am expecting it to have very good contents.

Nothing wrong with watching series in one big hit, but a series over 13 weeks means each week looking forward to the episode, enjoying the plot developments, raging at plot twists that leave you drooling for the next episode...thats where a good portion of the enjoyment lasts.

A movie is going to appear, make its impact on the fan base, and then fade. I cant help but feel this is going to be the swansong of the entire franchise, 'cos Kadokawa doesn't have the guts to risk another series flop (or maybe they know they cannot recreate what made season one so good? Who knows).

Another issue is that Disappearance is a fairly lengthy story. Cramming it into two hours might make it feel rushed. Most fans feel it should be at least 6-8 episodes long (i.e. 3-4 hours) to properly cover the entire story.

Uhh... Isn't six to eight episodes around two to two hours and forty minutes [which is fairly reasonable; Mononoke was around that length and I was wondering where the time went during that motion picture] seeing as an episode is around 20 mins, unless I've been watching the wrong series... ? Also, they'd probably change the pacing so it feels different from a regular episode and probably cut down/extend scenes to create a greater sense of fluidity.

24 minute episodes... minus the OP and ED... about 20/21 minutes...

2 hours is, indeed, about 6 episodes.

and a six episode series isn't very long.

Melancholy was six episodes long, Sighs was five. Both were whole novels. I see no reason why they can't fit Disappearance in the same timeframe of six episodes.

Alright! Feb 2010!

But...

Unfortunately I am lacking of any skill in Japanese, so I'll wait until some maniac uploads it on Youtube with subs [FEB 2010!] or until the DVD release in the West [which may not even happen.]

While the fanbase has taken a huge hit, I'm sure there will be more than enough people willing to sub the film as soon as it's released on DVD in Japan. I mean; EE finished... and STILL Sighs was aubbed, right?

As for western DVD release... I'd say that's probably a definite, given that the first lot of DVDs sold pretty well outside Japan (I've been led to believe, at least) and the 'second season' will likely be bought outside Japan also, despite Endless Eight.

Fans will buy anything, right? :3

The Haruhi.tv website has a runtime up for the flick, 150 minutes, plus a confirmation of the February 6 2010 release date. Posted it on the front page...

2 and half hours?! Considering this is a film, its far too long. It'll be like watching Lord of the Rings. Its a good film but you have to go to the loo far too many times through it that you just get bored. Imagine if its bad as well. 2 and half hours of possible crap doesn't sound appealing. I'd much rather they'd release it in episode form to be honest. I really don't know what to think of this. Probably my loss of interest in anime talking here...

I do agree that 2.5 hours seems a bit excessive, but this is an alternative option to a series, so I am pleased to see its getting a fair run time length.
