K-ON!

Wait, there are people who watch anime other than mine? I guess you can talk about them here then...

Ahh the memories...and yeah, the seiyuu's for Mio, Yui (and Konata) can look quite like the characters they are lending their voices to.

Will probably watch this for the sake of something to watch. I should probably take a look and see what the current choices actually are other than Shugo Chara Party, FMA: Brotherhood and Soranowoo.

Though maybe I should focus on replacing my computer's PSU first?

Heres hoping FMA keeps going. I am going to go into severe withdrawal once that finishes, and I do not think K-ON!! will fill the gap...

Well, it's worth watching if you enjoy slow-paced shows like Azumanga Diaoh or Lucky Star. K-ON! is a lighthearted, cheerful series that you just have to sit back and enjoy... in other words, perfect for relaxation. Just don't expect any fast-paced action or gripping drama.

Well a few episodes couldn't hurt, surely.

...

Welp, it ain't bad, but it's really er... "sweet" I suppose, and it had so many damn shout-outs to Detroit Metal City that I started watching that instead.

Well I've finished the first season.

Why is this show so popular again?

I mean, I can handle slower paced shows but K-ON is on a completely different level. There is no conflict (if you could even call it that) until the last four episodes, everyone almost immediately succeeds at everything they do and there is really no substance at all to the characters. You'd think that following the adventures of four (then five) high school girls as they started up a band and aimed for stardom would be ripe with intrigue, drama, character development, and the blood, sweat and tears (to use a hackneyed expression) that go into embarking on such an endeavour; but no, you watch these girls drink their tea, eat their sweets and live lives that are as two dimensional as the paper they are drawn on.

I was hoping for the journeys of some budding maidens of rock, but instead I got pure fluff.

Now, I'm not usually this vitriolic when I watch something I dislike, but I guess K-ON is an exception.

edit: however, that ending theme is pretty damn good.

That's exactly why K-ON! so popular. It's a slice-of-life relaxation show; something to watch when you just want to kick back and escape into a happy happy funtime fantasy world. That's why it draws so many comparisons to Azumanga Diaoh and similar shows... it's essentially the anime equivalent of easy listening music.

Another, perhaps more appropriate, analogy about K-ON!: It's the anime version of chocolate. It is sweet, insubstantial and enjoyable if taken in small quantities.

I tip my hat to you sir for enlightening me.

I've always thought slice of life meant stuff like Niea under 7 and Welcome to the NHK; more character than story driven as we get to know them through their day-to-day.

"The more you know."

...not really, no. Slice of life is as it's name suggests... a slice of the life of a fairly normal character. Lucky Star was slice of life. Welcome to the NHK was too story driven for the SOL genre.

Though I still believe K-On! was about as good as watching paint dry. It just happens that this particular paint is pink and fluffy.

Slightly off topic... why does this forum always seem to come alive when I have no access?

Welp, this is ironic. I somehow watched the first episode for season 2 and it's looking like it might shape up to be better than the last. The atmosphere seems a little different this time around.

It really would be ironic if this season turned out better, since the opening and ending themes definitely aren't (in my opinion at least).

Then again I guess it's just hard to beat Cagayake! Girls and Don't Say "Lazy", so maybe there's no avoiding it?

Quoted for truth. The only thing I can tolerate about K-On! is the music, Ritsu and possibly some of the outfits/instruments. The 4-string Fender Jazz Sunburst Mio has is a lovely style, as well as Ritsu's Yamaha Hipgig.

I'd put it somewhat less harshly, though it's not as if I can fault you. I personally think it's an awful show. orz;;
