Katakana is used for onomatopoeia, non japanese names/words and a few other things. Unlike kanji, katakana can't really be swapped with hiragana and still make much sense. At least, that's what I'm led to believe. I could be corrected by someone else, of course.]

[Maikeru was (almost) right the first time. Baka is written in hiragana since it's a Japanese word, not a foreign loanword or onomatopoeia. Therefore, the kanji for what he wrote would be 馬鹿鳥 (ばかとり). The only mistake was that とり is bird, not chicken. Chicken is 鶏 (にわとり) when referring to the bird, or 鳥肉 (とりにく) when referring to the meat.]
