Joel: There was a man, no idea who/where, that climbed his college roof with a gun. He shot at people until the police killed him. He had left a suicide note explaining why he wanted to die... and why he wanted to take numerous, random people with him.

Even in a war, such a thing wouldn't be acceptable. Killing random non-combatants is still against the laws of war.

I could go on and on about Archer's speech about heroism being selfish, but if you've found an MoH awardee since he Second World War just for killing an armed enemy, then please do show.

Whatever. Anyone under the impression all you need to do to be a war hero is "Kill lots of badguys." is deluded.

nobodies are bad guys in the war. If u think the enemies are bad guys then ure bad guys too to them. A hero is the one who won battles and serve his country wells. No matter he is alive or not. Its hard for me to say it all since i'm lazy after one night watch drama

Do you consider those who killed so many people and destroyed the land of Vietnam, or those who fought for Hitler's ideals, 'heroes'?

The people who get called heroes are those that, while under those commands only kill to protect those under fire alongside them. Those that kill only when commanded, and regret it afterwards.

When conscription was introduced in England there were those that refused for moral reasons. The 'conscientious objectors', who spent the war in prison, are far more of a hero. they're remembered as a minority. That's saying a lot.

Soldiers are remembered as soldiers... people who'll kill for money and their country. they aren't remembered as merciful men of honour.

And on the opposite side of a coin, as much as I dislike random warmongering, I also despite conscientious objectors, perhaps more so.

Anyone who is incapable of taking action when the need arises, is, personally, worse than anyone who jumps off impulsively. It's failure by inaction, an inability to think beyond one's self. I could go on and on with more reasons, but this is already off topic.

Personally, i believe it's not what you say. The conscientious objectors put across what they wanted to say, at their own risk. They are known for what they did... they have done more than any soldier did, at the time. They stood out.

...and yeah... rather off-topic

If we had a reputation system on here, I'd +1 you for this post.

If everyone on both sides goes to war because they're conscripted, we get bloody wars. If everyone goes to prison instead, well... guess. I believe a real 'hero' would be someone who sets an example of how to better the world by following it.
