For those of you who don't know, J.J. Abrams is directing a new Star Trek movie, set to be released Christmas of this year. This movie will go back to the time of the original series, with a new cast of actors playing Spock, Kirk and company.

I like how the construction methods bring the whole premise a bit closer to our world, making suspension of disbelief a bit easier. Next time I go to Newport News I'll probably catch myself looking for the Enterprise

My feeling is I hope these Actors do their own versions of the mannerisms of the Enterprise crew .. If it's going to be a 1960's clone..
I'd not be happy..

@Nagato: Hai, JJ Abrams said that this trailer was meant to show that the future shown in Star Trek is closer than we think.

@Shamisen: They guy who's playing Kirk... Chris Pine, I think... says that it's impossible to replicate Shatner's performance and that he acts out his own interpretation of Kirk. As for the rest of the actors, we'll just have to wait and see...

Star Trek is currently sitting on an extremely impressive 95% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes, a higher rating than either The Dark Knight or Iron Man received. The consensus states that "Star Trek reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike." To say that the hype for this film has reached a fever pitch would be a gross understatement.

I'm seeing it on Saturday. How about all of you?

Just saw it today. certainly the rave is well deserved. yes it does complement the previous trekky films in more ways then one and there are more spectacular visuals then you could shake a stick at.

What is the protocol for discussing a film which was just released, and most of the ppl that frequent this forum are more then likely to see, therefore not passing along any details that would spoil said film?

We all know its a reinvention of the star trek universe, and the movie certainly pulls that off very well with a pretty good story line that answers the questions. And then there is the new enterprise. The pre-release pictures don't do it any justice whatsoever. It is a pretty ship and the pan sequences...yeah. nice.

New actors fit into their roles pretty well, leaving the door wide open for sequels and developments. J J I salute you.

It seems as if Star Trek is headed for an impressive $75 million opening weekend in the United States, as well as a fairly respectable $35 million in overseas markets. The question now is if it will have the staying power to continue earning in the upcoming weeks.

President Obama has seen Star Trek, and he liked it. Furthermore, NASA beamed Star Trek into the final frontier last Thursday, in order to allow an astronaut on the International Space Station to watch it.

Star Trek continues to perform impressively at the domestic box office.

Paramount has indicated that not only has a Star Trek sequel has been greenlit, but Trek is a big part of their future plans. In these tough economic times, Paramount plans to cut down on the sheer volume of movies they release, and instead focus on their big franchises (Iron Man, Transformers and Star Trek). This news has pleased many comic book and sci-fi fans.

if the quality of sequels turns out to be as good as all the first runners, then I will be pleased as well. Found Iron Man way better then I expected and Transformers was awesome.
The fact that there is a star trek sequel is a no brainer, but the same rules applies. JJ Abrams better stick around, its his baby now, just like christopher nolan re-booted batman.

Correct me if im wrong, but with the exception of the hulk (havent seen the more recent one), all comic book movies of recent years have been top notch, so no wonder why fans are thrillled.

People thought X-Men was bad? I saw it the other day and thought it was very good. The action and stuff was good anyway... Plot kinda sucked but y'know. Was all just a bit of fun.

So what is the best place for someone like me to start watching Star Trek? I have not seen any of the TV shows. Did they make other movies besides the new one?

You'll have to wait for Ryoko or Shami, methinks =p

WELL...

I'd say the best place to start is the Time Travel Fan Collective and the Borg Fan Collective. The fan collectives play like a "best of" tour each based around a specific theme. Watching them will let you see episodes from every Star Trek series, and give you a good idea of the tone and setting of each series. After that, depending on which episodes from the Collectives that you enjoyed the most, I can offer further suggestions...

Prior to Star Trek, there were 10 other Star Trek movies. The first six were based around The Original Series, and the last four were based around The Next Generation. Only about half of them are good, though.
