Apparently the characters shoot themselves in the head to activate some kind of power. In Haruhi's case, the power activated would be the Shinjin behind her.

I don't really get it, either - this was the answer I got when I asked around.

they shoot themselves in the head? the only power i reckon they'd receive is a migraine headache, and that aint a ball of fun

and in haruhi's case, we'd have a brief interview with that shinji (ouch), then the universe would inconveniently collapse since its god is dead with a migrain
