Logicomas are taking our jobs.

On this episode of Bakacast, we close out the fall season by ranting about Gun Gale Online, Tokyo ESP, and Zankyou no Terror. Thankfully, Space Dandy and Ghost in the Shell: Arise were there to save what would otherwise be a pretty disappointing week.

No, seriously, what is it? The writers never told me.

In this belated episode of Bakacast (thanks, work and school!), there’s a whole lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Largely in the direction of Adlnoah Zero and Zankyou no Terror, but Tokyo Ghoul and Gun Gale both receive their fair share. I suppose this is my punishment for my terrible decision at the start of this season to judge Nozaki-kun by its cover. I’m sorry, okay? I’ve realized my mistake! Please stop hurting me!

Effect: Target Empire sends half their fleet to the graveyard.

The mediocrity keeps on rolling in this episode of Bakacast. Between a lackluster JoJo fight, Gun Gale spending most of their episode on tedious exposition (and BUTTS BUTTS BUTTS), and Aldnoah Zero having several of ridiculous action scenes back to back, it’s a good thing that Space Dandy, Kill La Kill, Hanamonogatari and LoGH are here to pick up the slack.

Why bother with interesting conflicts and development when you can just open the floodgates?

It’s a disappointing week for anime on this episode of Bakacast (well, for some of the hosts, anyway). Even JoJo’s manages to underwhelm. Thankfully, Mushi-shi is here to remind us of how excellent it is and tantalize us with yet another season. Speaking of which, fall is nearly upon us, isn’t it? I’ll be crossing my fingers that next season isn’t quite such a timesink as this one was.

Clearly Kirito has never played a session of D&D.

Since Ben was busy having fun playing tabletop games, it’s just Larry, Aaron and me this week. This means we’ll be holding off on Mushishi and Hanamonogatari until next time. Fortunately, that still leaves us with plenty to talk about, such as: how Tokyo Ghoul is pretty much a gory version of Sword Art Online; why Aldnoah Zero doesn’t make any sense; and the mounting evidence that Tokyo ESP’s anime-original content is doing far more harm than good.

Bakacast #212 – This Week Kinda Sucked

At least LoGH will never let us down.

It’s a bit of a depressing week on Bakacast. JoJo is merely mediocre, Argevollen and Zankyou no Terror are downright stupid, and the artists of Gun Gale Online have taken a sudden interest in really making sure we notice Shinon’s butt. And despite our reticence to drop shows this late into the season, there has been at least one casualty. I’d tell you to try and guess which one, but my rigid formatting standards require me to spoil it in the timestamps below; so it would be a bit pointless, wouldn’t it?

On the other hand, we also get to watch Hanamonogatari, so it ain’t all bad.

See ya later, whimsical-animation cowboy.

On this week’s Bakacast, not only do we watch “The Wind Rises,” but we also managed to review it in a fairly timely fashion. Well, timely for us, anyway. Also, after much prodding from Ben and all you guys, I finally got around to checking out Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Turns out that show is good. Who would have thought.

Such majestic creatures.

This week on Bakacast, I jinx it by saying we’re breezing through the reviews around the 11-minute mark. Turns out that was just a fluke, and it’s just as long as all the others. We forget to mention it during the show, but we are no longer reviewing Barakamon; not because we don’t like it (in fact, it might be our favorite series this season), but because it’s a comedy, so there’s really not a lot to say about it other than, “There sure were some pretty great jokes again.” The same thing will probably happen with Sabagebu.

Reflection probably doesn’t have anything to do with it, right?

On this episode of Bakacast, we have a lot of catching up to do. We’re talking, like, over 20 episodes of catching up. Also, we finally review GitS: Arise #3 and wade through a pool of listener questions. Oh, by the way, we don’t mention it during the episode, but we’ve dropped Glasslip. Turns out only Ben cared enough to watch episodes 3 and 4, and he didn’t feel it was a good use of his time.

And as promised in the listener questions segment, here are my recommendations for non-superhero, American comic books. Keep in mind that most things published by Image are likely to be R-rated for violence, language, sexual content or some combination of the three.
Bone by Jeff Smith
Phonogram: Rue Britannia by Kieron Gillen
The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen
Godzilla: Half Century War by James Stokoe
The Midas Flesh by Ryan North
Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction (this one is, like, 200% NSFW)
Pretty Deadly by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Saga by Brian K Vaughan
Beasts of Burden Volume 1 (which is free online) and Volume 2 (which collects the previous short stories and the four-issue miniseries) by Evan Dorkin
We3 by Grant Morrison
Rat Queens by Meg Dejmal and Kurtis J Wiebe

And there’s probably a whole lot more that I’m forgetting, but that should be a pretty good start.

The judges give her 10 points for style.

On this week’s episode, a few series show some chinks in their armor, the ones that already looked weak continue to not impress, and Barakamon has somehow become my favorite show. Never would have guessed that one. Also, be aware that I will be going on vacation for a week, which means the next episode will be delayed. We’ll make up for it by doubling up on our reviews for that episode. Hopefully it doesn’t end up taking, like, four hours.
