Bakacast – The Little Things that Kill

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Just when we thought we were getting these things down to a reasonable length, we have a listener question segment that’s almost as long as all the reviews combined. That’s what we get for attempting to explain complex social problems on a podcast normally about things that are the complete opposite of anything serious.

At least the episodes this week were better than last time, especially since last week didn’t include the fantastic Wasurenagumo. Fair warning, our review of the show spoils everything. So if you haven’t watched it yet (and you totally should), do that before getting to that segment.

Also, I finally crumble before Scamp’s persistent love of Aquarion EVOL. I’m gonna try to catch up on the show before the end of this season.

Hopefully without destroying my mind.

Bakacast – Mass Naked Scamp Event

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

I can hear you already, listeners.

“But Dustin, what does that album art have to do with the title?” you ask.

It has nothing to do with the title, and for that you should be grateful. Specifically, be grateful to Kenneth Alexander, who drew it for us.

As of this episode, four shows are getting close to being dropped. Space Bros is flying in the danger zone simply because it’s gotten really boring lately; and by “lately” I mean “since episode 4.” Fujiko Mine is walking a razor’s edge thanks to its consistently questionable treatment of its characters. Mysterious Girlfriend X will walk the plank if it doesn’t prove it’s more than a one-trick pony. And Sankarea needs to stop the insulting fanservice lest we mercy-kill it.

Bakacast – Pain is Power

Citizens of the internet! Do not fear the bad anime lurking around every corner. The Bakarangers are here to protect you.

Glen–Bakayellow–has supernatural yuri senses, capable of detecting it in a show from just a single sentence. Larry–Bakablue–=wields the brain-melting might of tortured metaphors. And I–Bakared–possess withering sarcasm the like that no show can withstand.

When we work together, even the horror of AKB0048 can’t hope to defeat us.

If you have any praise to give your brave guardians of truth and justice, you can send it to bakacast[at]projectharuhi.net or leave it in the comments below.

Bakacast – The 100th Episode

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Dear God. We’ve really done 100 of these things, haven’t we? That’s so many hours talking. So many hours editing. So many episodes of anime watched. Like, probably more anime than I had watched in my entire life before the podcast started.

And even more amazingly, we still have listeners after all those episodes. We haven’t driven all of you off yet. I suppose I’ll just have to step up my game…

Unfortunately, Scamp couldn’t be with us for this momentous occasion because he was busy being a responsible student. For more details on his hiatus, see his blog post about it.

Bakacast – Turtles All the Way Down

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Ozuma continues its downward spiral right to the very end, crashing upon the sharp rocks of its own hubris.

Fujike Mine, meanwhile, shows us how big a difference having a competent writer can make; Sankarea finally clicks with the whole podcast crew; Eureka Seven wows me (and worries Scamp); and Hyouka–like much of KyoAni’s output these days–turns out to be a whole lot of pretty pictures with not a lot of substance.

Also, Scamp and Glen still haven’t caught up on Saint Seiya Omega, because they are lame.

Bakacast – All That Jazz

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

While we all will miss Future Diary, the anime god replaces what it takes away. And so this week gives us Sakamichi no Apollon.

All hail Yoko Kanno.

Speaking of filling gaps, Shining Hearts takes on the important task of being this week’s terrible fanservice anime, since there was no way in hell we were going to suffer through Queen’s Blade Rebellion again. Also: Larry makes a penis joke, which I’m pretty sure means pigs are going to start flying. So keep an eye on the sky.

    • I was actually thinking of two entirely different Fast Karate podcasts. The Dark Spectre of Moe episode is about DearS. The show where the talk about Kanon is actually titled UGUUU! Both of them are worth listening to.
  • 2:15:17 – ED: Filament (Future Diary)

SPECIAL NOTE: You might notice that Jormungand and Saint Seiya Omega are missing. We have not dropped them. In the case of Saint Seiya, Glen and Scamp still have not caught up, so I just mentioned I’m still watching and enjoying it near the end of the podcast. We will do full episode reviews of it once someone other than me is keeping up. As for Jormungand, the sub of episode 2 was released too close to our recording time, so we decided to skip it and review it next week.

We usher in the first shotgun blast of spring content with our longest episode yet. And we bring Scamp (from The Cart Driver) along to share in our suffering.

Normally this is where I’d do a long, run-on sentence briefly describing some key thoughts we had about the episodes, but we reviewed nearly two dozen shows. Sorry, but I’m not that dedicated to my shtick.

Bakacast – My OTP

If the Persona 4 anime is canon, my fanfiction has just been vindicated.

On this episode of Bakacast, we say goodbye to the winter season as we roll out the welcome mat for spring. Persona 4 pulls some annoying capitalist shenanigans, Last Exile resolves its plot exactly how we all feared, Future Diary finally makes good on it’s time-god’s name, Mouretsu Pirates sinks its pacing with school life, Ozuma suffers from Twilight syndrome, Saint Seiya Omega has way too much talking, Zetman finally scratches our superhero itch, and Space Bros is every bit as good as we were hoping it would be.

Bakacast – Time Shenanigans

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

What amazes me is not that we reviewed two very different types of shows that both included time travel. What amazes me is that the time travel made sense.

In this episode of Bakacast, Persona 4 reveals the final final boss, Future Diary acknowledges that sex is a thing that sometimes happens, Fam actually gets some development in Last Exile, Mouretsu Pirates earns itself a second chance, High School Boys continues to crawl very slowly back to what it once was, Ozuma’s potential is held back by poor pacing, and Noein gets placed into that category of rare shows that actually has a satisfying ending.

Bakacast – He’s Not Done Talking

I suppose it’s appropriate that Nisemonogatari ended with what was essentially a philosophical filibuster from Araragi.

In this episode of Bakacast, Persona 4 lays on the melodrama a bit too thick, Future Diary gives Akise a fantastic sendoff while making a questionable divergence from the manga, Fam actually admits she was wrong in Last Exile, Mouretsu Pirate’s pacing finally gets to us, and the most interesting characters in Ozuma–suprisingly–turn out to be the females.

Good job, Leiji Matsumoto. We’re proud of you. For now.
