Bakacast – Teddie is a Boss

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Hey, good news! This podcast is finally under two hours, despite starting our reviews a little later than usual! Also, this is one of the most positive episodes we've had so far this season, with only one stinker (you can probably guess which show produced it). Plus, Scamp confesses his undying love for Drossel von Flügel, Glen attempts to explain the nonsensical insanity of the Utena movie, and I analyze Limbo as if I'm writing an English paper about it.

Please email listener questions to bakacast[at]projectharuhi.net or leave them in the comments below.

About Dustin

Dustin (aka Stilts) enjoys playing and yelling at video games, especially RPGs. He also likes super robot shows… the more outrageous the plot, the better!

I warned you about that Utena movie. I WARNED YOU.

Fate/Zero, Future Diary and Persona are probably the best shows in their season.
I really do hope Penguindrum goes out with a bang.
Oh Eden of the East the second movie really blew up. I mean the ending just fell flat.

    Only one question this week.
Do you have a favorite anime series that’s over 50+ or even 100+ episodes?
    Mines currently Galaxy Express 999.

I’m still debating picking up Skyward Sword. I was really, really, really tired of the series, but looking forward to actual good motion control, and what I’m hearing is that the motion control isn’t that great, even frustrating in parts, but there are so many minor innovations I should buy it anyway. This is kind of what I heard about Twilight Princess too, however, which I dropped after a couple of dungeons.

Also, while I agree with not liking twists just for the sake of twists, The Usual Suspects is pretty fun and Keyser Soze continues to be a reference maybe a decade later. Worth a watch if you’re flipping through some day and it’s on cable.

I’m guessing my questions from last week came in after the podcast was recorded, so looking forward to getting your takes. Wish I had more current anime questions or comments but it seems from your reviews like this season is filled with mid to high 4 quality shows with (as Larry said) not a ton of new ideas, which I’m finding I’m not super motivated to check out given that there’s so much old great stuff for a fairly new anime fan to watch (right now I have FLCL, Death Note, and Gurren Lagann in the Netflix queue).

Regarding the behavior of Tsutomo (glasses guy) on Chihayafuru, I think I emphasized with him a lot more than you did.  Sure he was wrong, and even he knew he was being wrong and childish.  At the same time, you have to remember that he was a loner without any friends when the club picked him up.  It had to be devastating when he thought that they were just using him to fill a chair and that they only cared about having enough names to enter the tournament.  How terrible is it to feel like you aren’t contributing anything to your team?  I can totally buy a teenager storming off in a sulk and then getting over it just as quickly.  That whole sequence made him feel much more like a real person to me, because I can imagine myself acting like that when I was his age.

This isn’t so much a question rather than a comment. I’m not sure how you get a hold of the material that you review but if you get a hold of it like many other people do you may wish to sign the government petition below so that you can continue to accesses the latest amine titles unhindered.

The ending of the Fate/Zero anime will end at episode 13 and the rest will air in the Spring of 2012. I just wanted to mention this because I know you might rip on it depending on how it ends.

Is it just me or is Sabre more of a Jeanne d’Arc anyway? The stoic Madonna hardened by battle and wracked by guilt seems more of her gig than King “welp I accidentally slept with my half sister because of sorcery and now this ill-begotten son has married my wife and stole the throne also did I mention one of my best friends got turned into a tree ¯_(ツ)_/¯” Arthur (though apparently Morded was changed to a homunculus in fate/zero, which is kind of pointless imo.)

    • Arthur’s problem was that he only ever did what he personally believed was right and never accepted input, criticism or advice from anyone else. I have a feeling Saber will get a chance to screw up something gloriously before the show’s over. Changing Mordred to a homunculus makes sense since I doubt she would have been able to impregnate anyone, but you can probably find a few doujins that would prove me wrong.

I’m pretty sure England was overrun by the Saxons almost immediately after Arthur’s death.

    • Ryu

Yeah but what I’m saiyan is that at some point probably around lady in the lake that he just flicked his shades down and rolled with it. I mean, the dude found killing giants and witches hilarious, it’s kind of hard to believe that this incarnation would be so stiff.

I don’t know why but I’m finding it kind of hilarious that you didn’t consider that maybe Sabre could have birthed Mordred. Arthur killing and being killed by his own son really shows how far he had fallen during his reign on a personal level, I doubt getting killed by a soulless golem out of nowhere conveys the same thing.

Also yeah I know about the Saxons coming in and wrecking the place (and then the Normans[?] coming in and wrecking them) and before that the Romans coming in and wrecking the Celts. Sabre made it sound like England got swallowed up by magic or something  instead of going on to control a large portion of the known world.

    • Dayriff

I would have found it totally hilarious if Waver had stepped forward and said, “Hey, I’m from Britain and we’re actually pretty happy and retain legends of your kingdom as part of our proud cultural heritage.  Britain is doing pretty great and it all worked out in the long run, so you can relax, Saber.”

The first chapter of Fate/Apocrypha has been released and there’s twice as many servants and some of the master and servant pairings are pretty interesting.
