So…

Would it be to soon to make a dead baby joke?

Yeah?

Okay, never mind, then.

I’m just saying that A Modest Proposal becomes a whole lot more palatable when the food tastes like sushi.

I have no idea what Scamp is talking about

It’s probably more entertaining than Aku no Hana, though.

I wonder how many of our episode titles have contained an innuendo? Probably half of them at this point.

This week on Bakacast, I unleash two weeks of pent-up frustration on Aku no Hana. Plus, we dive into our substantial backlog of listener questions like a child jumping on a pile of raked autumn leaves.

Bakacast – What the Hell, Gargantia?

As you will probably notice immediately, I could not host this week’s podcast, because I was helping a very good friend of mine who was in town planning his upcoming wedding. So, though I do love bantering with everyone, the only sensible choice was to bow out for a week and hand the reigns to Larry. He did a fine job, and was courteous enough to hold off on the listener questions until I came back (which is why this episode is actually shorter than an hour).

Anyway, have fun listening to Megan let loose on Gargantia, which totally deserved every bit of her anger. My comments in last week’s post about Titan and Gargantia being our only consistently good shows may have been premature.

Even fairly intelligent commentary can only get you so far when your show is about terrible people taking forever to do terrible things to each other.

Now that our start-of-season grace period has passed, it’s time for us to get brutal on the surviving series. The first to be executed is Valvrave, a show that couldn’t manage to be good at anything. If Aku no Hana and Maou-sama aren’t careful, they’ll be next on the chopping block. At least we’ll always have Titan and Gargantia to pick up the slack.

We hope, anyway.

I don’t know about you, but the Team Rocket-style exit will always get at least a chuckle out of me.

In this episode, Maou-sama surprises us all by making us emotionally invested in all the characters, we finally get fed up with OreImo, and Titan gives Scamp a new waifu to pine after. Also, we start our retro review of Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure.

NOTE: If you downloaded this episode before Monday, April 15 3 P.M. PDT, then you got the version where I forgot to edit out a couple lengthy sections of me on the phone and other boring stuff that interrupted our discussion. Please replace that version with this one.

It’s time once again for the start of a new season, and this one ends up being surprisingly positive. With some notable exceptions (OreImo, Red Data Girl, Majestic Prince, Karneval), the handful of shows we decided to watch fell into the good-to-great category. It’s unlikely that we’ll be dropping many more shows after the second and third weeks.

Another positive is that this seasons finally gives Scamp, Megan and me opportunities to go on rants again. It’s been too long.

Aku no Hana – Episode 1

[gg]_Aku_no_Hana_-_01_[88C4AA88].mkv_snapshot_20.31_[2013.04.07_12.41.50]

Quiet and bucolic reader,
Upright man, sober and naive,
Throw away this book, saturnine,
Orgiac and melancholy.

If you did not do your rhetoric
With Satan, that artful dean,
Throw it away, you’d grasp nothing,
Or else think me hysterical.

You’d never understand the literature I read. It’s not for you.

[gg]_Aku_no_Hana_-_01_[88C4AA88].mkv_snapshot_16.55_[2013.04.07_12.40.08]

When I read it, I see her jet black hair caressing her shoulders, resting on them like a lover. I see an ivory smile and playful eyes, beckoning me closer. Come. Come closer. I see red ribbon, slightly crooked, concealing the loosened collar of an untucked shirt. Explore, the eyes say.

[gg]_Aku_no_Hana_-_01_[88C4AA88].mkv_snapshot_12.05_[2013.04.07_12.38.30]

When I read it, I feel rough cloth sliding through my fingers, giving way to soft skin. I feel the smoothness and contours of this body carved from dreams–the bumps and the dimples. Sink in, they say.

[gg]_Aku_no_Hana_-_01_[88C4AA88].mkv_snapshot_11.33_[2013.04.07_12.37.43]

When I read it, I smell the sweat on her skin, taste the balm on her lips and hear a gasp as quiet as a whisper yet glorious as the trumpeting of the heavenly host. This is for you, they say.

You’d never understand this book.

It would not speak to you.

But if, without being entranced,
Your eye can plunge in the abyss,
Read me, to learn to love me;
Inquisitive soul that suffers
And keeps on seeking paradise,
Pity me!… or else, I curse you!

~Epigraph for a Condemned Book (by Charles Baudelaire; translated by William Aggeler)
