Haruhi vs. Invader Zim!

This fan-made trailer for a Haruhi vs. Invader Zim crossover has been making the rounds recently.

It's quite well-made... I hope this inspires somebody to make a full-length Haruhi/Zim mashup. A recent Lotte ad has also been quite popular lately, claiming that their new Acuo gum gives you fresh breath powerful enough to transform ordinary people into Haruhi characters.

Man, I wish MY cat would turn into a sexy catgirl. Where can I buy some of this gum?

About Jon

Jon is a Japanese culture enthusiast, professional pervert and roleplaying fanatic who appreciates flexible gender identities. He enjoys science fiction, Gunpla, classical music and Red Stripe.

  • I saw the Haruhi+Invader Zim trailer on April Fool’s Day. Very well made!

And that commercial is kind of…bizarre 0_o Not sure what message they’re trying to go for. That the gum turns people (and cats) into anime characters?

    • If YOU could turn into an anime character, wouldn’t you do it? Better still, if you could turn, say, that annoying bully or stuck-up cheerleader into Haruhi or Mikuru, wouldn’t you do it? I know I would.

See, the commercial is simple wish fulfillment. Many otaku wish they could become and/or meet their favorite anime characters in real life, so this commercial presents a small bit of escapist fantasy following that theme.

    • Another example of a transformational escapist fantasy would be this Mountain Dew ad, in which a guy uses a magic car remote to change his broken-down jalopy into a tricked-out pickup truck, and his boring male friend into a sexy girlfriend.

Oddly enough, this ad has found wide popularity among the transgender internet subculture, who use it to catalyze a different kind of escapist fantasy than the original creators intended; namely, the fantasy of transforming from a man into a woman.
