Haruhi Season 2 DVD Details Revealed

Image unrelated but awesome.

How much would you pay for Endless Eight?

Bandai has just released detailed information about The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2 DVD boxset. This release will contain 14 episodes, both dubbed and subbed. Also included are various special features such as "location scouting videos", "Behind The Scenes of Aya Hirano's Music Video", "Endless Eight Prologue",  and a "special event video", as well as CD tracks for "Super Driver" and "Tomare." Oh, and don't forget the exciting "interactive menus!" Oh boy!

And the best part: this all-frills boxset can be yours for the low, low price of $64.98!

Wait a minute... sixty-five dollars? Bandai wants to charge me sixty-five dollars for fourteen episodes of Haruhi? Worse, eight of those are the same friggin' episode! GO TO HELL, BANDAI!

Sorry, I know I shouldn't be so pissed. After all, the Japanese had to pay over five times as much for their Season 2 DVDs. Still, charging sixty-five bucks for less than six hours of anime seems a bit extreme, especially when the anime industry (not to mention the entire economy) is in a state of decline.

So, yeah... I think I'll wait for the Anime Legends boxset. How about you, dear readers? Are you willing to dish out the big bucks for Haruhi S2? Let us know in the poll below, then discuss the issue further in our forums!

Will you buy the upcoming Haruhi S2 boxset?

  • Yes! I don't mind paying $65. (32%, 45 Votes)
  • Yes, but I'll wait for a bargain price... perhaps at RightStuf. (23%, 32 Votes)
  • I think I'll wait for a cheaper boxset. (18%, 26 Votes)
  • Screw Bandai! I'm sticking with my fansubs. (13%, 19 Votes)
  • No, I'm not planning to buy it. (8%, 11 Votes)
  • I'm still not sure. (6%, 9 Votes)

Surely, if the anime industry is in a state of decline, higher prices would be more justified?
You are getting a spectacular deal on a series that would otherwise cost you hundreds of dollars. It’s people like you who refuse to pay the price, no matter how reasonable it may be, that are ruining the anime industry.

    • Refuse to pay the price? Where are you getting that from?

My shelves are filled with anime DVDs I’ve purchased at retail price. Heck, I was even willing to pay $77 for my Ghost in the Shell boxset. However, that contained twenty-six episodes from a show that, frankly, was of much higher quality than Haruhi S2.

Bandai is asking me to pay nearly twice as much per episode for Haruhi than I did for GITS. If it was the first season of Haruhi, I might consider it… but season two was a disaster, ridiculed by fans and critics alike thanks to Endless Eight. Why should I pay so much money for a season of subpar filler when there are so many other anime series I could be buying instead?

    • Hundreds of dollars? No way. $65 would be to buy a series that absolutely blew my mind with its awesomeness. So awesome that I stopped thinking about food (OMG). Endless Eight though was crap. Plain and simple. I would pay upwards of $70 for a good box set, but like Ritsu said; not for Haruhi S2. Wait a while, it shall come down in price.

  • Hmm… I see that Amazon has it for USD $44.99 (or if you noticed it last week, it’d be USD $41.99) and Right Stuf has it for USD $48.74. Both of those are lower than the price you are so outraged over. I’m sure you may also be able to find coupons for alternative places to lower the price even more if you searched.

Personally, I plan on getting this set to compliment my R2 copies (linked for proof) as a way of saying “thanks” to Bandai for bringing a subtitled version of Disappearance to theatres. I can’t wait to have this in my collection.

It’s still a very good set having seen the majority of extras (I’m curious as to the “special event video” but I have a suspicion it’s the easter egg on the R2 Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody disc). It’s well worth the full retail price for Haruhi and you get to see some of the behind-the-scenes footage in the model city that Kyoto Animation visited and the progression of the Super Driver single from PV to release day footage. After all, this is more than just Endless Eight regardless of how people are thinking of it.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think a lot of people are obsessed, including myself. In fact, I wouldn’t have found this ‘discussion’ if I weren’t. Anyhow, to point, I think the amount of obsessed people will make Bandai a pretty penny and pay this amount for Season 2. I don’t think it’d come out with that price if it were impossible. It’s a business, they know what they’re doing. I said I would never spend more than $20 for all the Endless Eight episodes together, but, I am already drooling over this and I will probably, if I can afford it, drop money here. I’m far too obsessed, and I think others are too, to let something like this be “too expensive”, but hey, I’m just speaking from the far end of obsession.
