K-ON! is licensed by Bandai

Are they laughing with Bandai... or at them?

I'm still in shock.

Despite their financial woes, Bandai Entertainment has just announced at Anime Expo that they've acquired the rights to K-ON!'s first season. There's no word yet if it will be dubbed or released on Blu-ray. Bandai also announced a series of live-action K-ON! marketing videos similar to the ASOS Brigade series for Haruhi. For these, they've cast Christina Vee as Mio, Karri Shirou as Yui, "Kix" as Tsumugi and "Briana" as Ritsu.

Hang on a second... Christina Vee as MIO? She's got a great singing voice, but their personalities couldn't be more different. This is going to be most interesting...

I think it's likely that Bandai will give K-ON! a dub, probably recycling many of the cast members from the Haruhi and Lucky Star dubs. However, in my opinion, their English version of "God Knows" was ear-splittingly painful, especially when compared to the original Japanese song. Given how music-oriented K-ON! is, I'm hoping they can track down some voice actors who can actually sing. Of course, I'd also be perfectly happy with a sub-only release.

Oh, and Bandai? If you try to pull the same "no Japanese audio track" crap that you did with Kurokami, I'm not buying it. Period.

    Bandai probably feels that they can recoup some money with the popularity of K-ON. Personally, I don’t understand it’s popularity but it is entertaining nonetheless.

    Although, I really liked the singing of God Knows in english I agree that they should find some VA who are stronger musically.

    • I’m a bit more skeptical. Haruhi and Lucky Star both didn’t sell as well as Bandai expected, and I’d say K-ON! has less appeal for American otaku then either one of those series. I’ll definitely buy it (provided it has the Japanese audio), but I’m not sure how many others will.

      In other words, it seems like a rather risky gamble on Bandai’s part.

    Its a risky gamble, but its one that proves to me that anime companies (well at least Bandai) still have some cahones xD. Hope they do the Blu Ray

    • Bandai hinted on Twitter that they have the Blu-ray rights. ^_^

  • Call me an optimist, but I’m actually excited about K-On! being english dubbed, I’ve loved the both seasons in japanese, and of course those voice actresses are still going to be the characters in my heart, but I enjoyed the Haruhi english dub moderately enjoyed the Lucky Star english Dub and I’m willing to give it a chance.
    Even if Patty and Mikuru were ear-bleeding.

    If anything, its a reason to rewatch the series, and anything will be better than the Animax dub. *shudder*
    (hopeful for japanese track.)

    • I’m willing to give any dub a chance… but I think the original voice actresses are too ingrained in my consciousness. It would just be strange hearing them speak in English. ^_^;

      That said, I do hope it gets a dub. Dubbed series always sell better.
