The people have spoken! You, the readers of this site, have chosen Sailor Mars as the best planetary Senshi, a choice I wholeheartedly agree with. After all, who could resist this fiery vixen’s siren call? To celebrate, I’ve put together a small gallery of my top ten favorite Sailor Mars fanart, as found on deviantART. I’ve also included my brief thoughts on each piece. Now, please keep in mind that I am neither an artist nor an art critic. These comments just represent my layman’s perspective as a *ahem* Mars enthusiast.
Check out these fantastic pictures below the break, and be sure to visit the artists’ DA pages and express your appreciation of their hard work. Enjoy!
This picture is part of an ongoing series, depicting the various Senshi in a Western-influenced cartoon style while they assume various seductive poses. Although Mars in unquestionably the sexiest, Neptune is a close second.
The impressive whirling streaks of flame are what won me over in this picture, along with the spectral angel wings emanating from Mars’ back.
Rarely do the Senshi get to be badass in their civilian form. This picture shows an alternate take on Mars, dressed as a naginata-wielding ninja shrine maiden. The only flaw is the eyes, which are a rather odd shade of black.
If Sailor Mars were a comic book superheroine, this is what she’d look like. Well, maybe her boobs would be a bit bigger… still, this finely-crafted piece would look right at home on any Marvel or DC cover.
A lot of artists try to draw Sailor Mars in a ‘realistic’ style, but this is the the most successful effort in my opinion. The reason for this is pretty simple: I don’t like copious amounts of lipstick.
Despite a few anatomical gaffes, this image still conveys a sense of elegance that defines Mars’ character. The flaming bow-and-arrow, drawn in a very wispy and phantasmal fashion, are also impressive.
For all the alternative art styles we’ve seen thus far, it’s nice to see a simple, well-drawn picture of Mars in the original anime aesthetic. I’ll always prefer this kind of elegantly simple style over its more elaborate Western counterparts.
This drool-worthy image is based on Sailor Mars’ appearance in the live-action show Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. It’s part of a series by the artist, which also includes Venus, Jupiter and Dark Mercury, all looking just as sexy as our fiery friend.
Here it is, my favorite Sailor Mars fanart of all time! This piece is drawn in a style similar to the ink-and-wash painting of Sesshū Tōyō, my favorite artist. Furthermore, it’s part of an ongoing challenge the artist calls “The 365 Project,” where she draws a new piece of art every single day for an entire year! Now that takes a level of dedication I can’t even fathom.
So, what do you think? Are my choices sound, or should another piece have taken top honor? Is there any great fanart I neglected to include? Let me know in the comments!
