Bakacast – Punch It in the Gun

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Jon is absent again this week, but that's okay. We kidnapped Thomas to help us talk about the second week of the spring season, where we still managed to miss a couple shows (Aria of the Scarlet Ammo, for instance, was released by gg two hours before before we started recording).  Somehow, even with over a dozen shows to talk about and a news section, we managed to keep this podcast under two hours. I think we might finally be getting decent at this whole reviewing thing.

We cover:

  • 2:47 - FUNimation licenses Panty & Stocking
  • 5:03 - The gg karaoke party (I'm singing on the far left, koda's right next to me with the mic)
  • 7:47 - Gosick #12
  • 14:13 - Suite PreCure #8 & #9
  • 18:45 - X-Men #2
  • 23:12 - Nichijou #2
  • 28:28 - Tiger & Bunny #2
  • 32:57 - Hanasaku Iroha #2
  • 40:12 - Toriko #2 (dropped)
  • 45: 32 - Battle Girls #1 & #2
  • 53:03 - Steins;Gate #2
  • 1:00:45 - Sket Dance #2
  • 1:06:55 - A-Channel #1
  • 1:13:54 - C: The Money of Soul #1
  • 1:19:59 - Macross Frontier #23, 24, 25
  • 1:33:56 - Listener question from Jon (you'll want to click this link for context)

About Dustin

Dustin (aka Stilts) enjoys playing and yelling at video games, especially RPGs. He also likes super robot shows… the more outrageous the plot, the better!

  • Hey, man, Sam Jackson was in Afro Samurai. He isn’t doing nothing recently anyway, so he could probably pick up a short role in a toon (when he’s not on Boondocks). It seems all he does these days to keep himself busy is appearing in cartoons.

“[Azumanga] didn’t just sit and linger with a bunch of dead time”
    “K-On wasn’t this bad”
Yes and …yes! But, I enjoyed it, though. I enjoy this show and the other shows mentioned, so I don’t know what’s with the disconnect here. I find more similarities than not , so… I don’t know. Honestly, sounds like you guys should probably drop it 🙁

Oh, you guys disliked the ending of Hanasaku Iroha that much? Dis is WACK. I’m sliding with Glen on this one. All I ask for from this show at this point is to be consistent with what it’s doing. Any sort of fladering is pretty minor, imo. Even if Ohana does end up found a trash bin the next morning (without the missing draft paper), that could be cool! It could turn out like Psycho. Or, the grumpy girl takes over and Ohana’s friend for the other school shows back up to solve the mystery. That would be awesome.

Hey Matty have you seen ep 3?

    • Jackson is narrating Disney’s African Cats film, so I don’t think he doing too much besides being Nick Fury for the Avengers stuff.

  • Ryu

Wait were the “anti x-men” Sentinels? Storm is weak? Is the Japanese team even paying attention to the plethora of source material?

Haven’t listened to the podcast, but I looked at the shownotes. No Ao no Exorcist? No Deadman Wonderland? Sadface.

    • *No Kaiji :<

    • The podcast was recorded the 13th of April.. The shows you mentioned weren’t subbed in time for that podcast. Given our present viewing load and knowing that we’ll drop some shows those two might make it into the mix.

    • Ryu

I was about to ask how far in advance these are recorded but you already have answered that, so thanks.

    • We’re recording on Thursday this season. The release date varies according to Dustin’s level of motivation.

  • I’m not sure why you guys would want to even bother with “JC Staff presents: the same show we have been making for years staring the stock standard tusndere loli voiced by Rie Kugimiya”.

I think the X-men anime so far is about on par with any of the other adaptations. Cyclops is whiny in any adaptation that has Phoenix dieing .

I can understand the dislike of Toriko. If you didn’t like One Piece you probably won’t like it as much. I do however think it has a great inventive world with a lot of imagination. The only two things that really worry me about the anime is that the manga gets really bloody for a Shonen Jump property. Bugs flying into someones eye then ripping up the inside of their body, Toriko himself has his finger eaten, hand ripped off, and then the entire arm blown off. The anime toned down the violence quite a bit compared to the first chapter, also they seem to have added a female reporter for no reason.

As the rest of the season goes, I still think Kaiji is the best of the season, following Deadman Wonderland (At least from the first episode), Tiger & Bunny I am enjoying a lot as well (I was of the minority that didn’t care that much for the first ep and liked the second one more). Enma-kun however, it broke my heart. After such a great fun first episode, the second one just had all the life drained out of it. I am hoping they really didn’t put all their creativity into the first episode, but with the third one being about breasts….my hope isn’t very high.

I definitely agree with the idea that Gosick works better as a slice of life series, tho, after seeing episode 13 I’m looking forward to how well the new mystery turns out. As to Avril’s surprise at Victorique being a girl, it goes down to the fact that it is supposed to be a boy’s name (Going by what is said in the novel, at least). And a Channel’s box cutter bit, I believe that is a standard piece of school stationary (mainly used in art classes).

  • Yaaay, I was mentioned on Bakacast!:)

Good episode, actually you guys made it clear to me what’s wrong with Nichijou- I liked the first two episodes but there was definitely something “off” about it that I couldn’t put my finger on. Listening to you guys discuss the issues you had with the pacing of the jokes and whatnot cleared everything up for me.

I’m totally on board with a My Little Pony segment, just FYI.

I have a feeling that when Funimation is strapped for cash they’ll have an anime dubbed entirely by Johnny Yong Bosch. Hell, he does everything else, might as well.
