Otaku Debate: Can Fat Girls Be Sexy?

You cannot unsee this.

Last week's sexy hair poll was so popular, I decided to make a weekly poll-oriented debate column. Welcome to the inaugural edition of Otaku Debate! Here, we will discuss the hard-hitting issues facing the otaku community today, while oogling as many sexy ladies as we can. Let's begin!

When I posted this image to Twitter last night, I was surprised when many of my followers expressing support for fat fetishism. Quite a few people thought that pictures such as this one (VERY NSFW) and the one above were sexy, often repeating the catchphrase "Big girls need love too." This got me thinking... last week's poll seemed to indicate a certain sense of conformity with regard to hairstyle preferences, with twintails and waist-length hair being the most popular. Are there a significant number of otaku who go against the norm and enjoy a nice, fat anime girl? Or is this particular fetish relegated to fringe status, supported by a small but vocal minority? Vote in the poll below, then let me know your thoughts on the matter in the comments!

Do you find fat girls sexy?

  • I don't mind a girl with a bit of meat on her. I wouldn't go so far as to say "fat" though. (41%, 56 Votes)
  • A little chubbiness is fine, but not TOO much. I like girls who are "fat in all the right places." (32%, 44 Votes)
  • Hell no! I like my girls thin. (16%, 22 Votes)
  • Yeah, I think fat girls are sexy. However, there is a limit. Morbidly obese is too far. (11%, 15 Votes)
  • I prefer my girls obese, often to the point of immobility. Perhaps the internet has warped my sensibilities? (1%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 138

  • This is the most important non-essential poll ever!

    • Maybe it is …. Yet it is also a fact of life… So onward with the comments.

  • The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin’
    That’s what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
    Or so I have read

My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I’d like to sink her with my pink torpedo

    Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl’s got ’em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

I suggest we create an anime called 大少女デブデブちゃん (Daishoujo Debu-Debu Chan) which revolves around a group of chubby high-school girls who start a “Food Appreciation Club” after school as an excuse to laze around in their clubroom and eat sweets. It could be a whole new genre… Debu Moe!

  • Miss Bipolar

…A very sensitive topic for me due to my inability to lose weight no matter what I do. O’course I’m going to say that a big girl can be sexy- but there’s a limit, obviously. Any more than one roll around the waist is pushing it. Legs…heh. The more leg the better.

Besides, personality over weight anyway, right? No one here’s -that- shallow, I hope. x3

    • Kei

Personally, I think we should be accepting of all body types. This ridiculous concept of sexuality that pop culture has created, where only the thinnest women are considered attractive, needs to go. Let’s appreciate everybody for who they are! And get more chubby girls in anime too, while we’re at it.

But you’re right. Personality always matters the most. But, speaking strictly in an anime-influenced aesthetic sense, I think fat character designs can be just as attractive as thin ones.

      • Define ‘fat’ against ‘obese’. The image above is not within healthy spec limits for someone of either Kagami’s or Konata’s height.

        Agree with Miss Bipolar.

      • Miss Bipolar

True, those pictures show those two as obese, rather than just chubby, or curvy. If they were taller, though, the weight might look more ‘evenly distributed’, therefore they wouldn’t appear as obese as they do in these images. It would be like if you took a ball of dough and squeezed in down, the dough would widen, making it ‘fatter’; whereas if you stretched it, it would get ‘thinner’.
Something that anime creators would have to deal with is not going either extreme- neither super-skinny, nor super-size. There are certain health problems that would come from being really skinny as well as really -not- skinny. It’s important that pop culture for both genders shows the risks of being skinny to the point of being practically snappable AND the risks of being obese.
As for what I’ve seen in anime of ‘fat’ girls, I’ve seen a small handful…but they weren’t sexy. Or at least, they weren’t -portrayed- as such (because of their weight? Or personality?). Mostly ‘fat’ people in anime are old ladies, slobs, nerds (Hirano for HOTD is chubby, right?), and perverts. Where are the sexy big girls? Pft.
Wow. I ramble too much when it comes to these things.
As a wise big sexy girl once said; “A skinny girl might be able to sneak through the gate into the back of a seedy club, but a big girl can make the roller-coaster go faster.”

      • Kei

Still, I’d like to see at least one relatable anime character depicted as fat at the two from the OP image. Not to glorify obesity, mind you, but to send a kind of “They’re here, they’re fat, get used to it” message. Anime girls these days are too idealized anyway.

      • Miss Bipolar

        Mhm, agreed.
It would make a good change.

  • Waiting to see someone vote:
I prefer my girls obese, often to the point of immobility. Perhaps the internet has warped my sensibilities? 😛

    • You are speaking of ANIME girls? I hope that is the context of your comment, cause it is the context of this post.

  • I hate you. So much.

  • Some guys like their women stick thin with a boyish figure a la Keira Knightly but voluptuous is such a sexy word 😉 I’m no Shallow Hal but I’m not a bigot either.

  • Vic

I think it’s all about taste. I mean, some people prefer skinny girls and some people prefer the bigger ones. Nobody should judge anyone’s taste, because there’s nothing wrong with it. I for one vouch that girls with meat in the right places are sexy, but it’s not like I marginalize the chubby one’s. I’ve seen good looking and fun chubby girls out there, and I don’t have a single problem with that.On the other hand, it is true that there’s not a substantial amount of chubby girls in anime. I think that recent and future anime creators should do their best to balance chubby characters within series. That way, they would get a wider variety viewers and supporters while taking down (like Kei said) the stereotype that pop culture has created over fat, chubby or any kind of girls.

I don;t go looking for rounder girls on the net, nor do I expect them in anime. IRL, I find that girls who carry more weight in the face (which typically comes with more around the middle as well) are often easier on the eyes. The extra … “padding”, I guess, smooths out places that would otherwise wrinkle and softens angles that might otherwise be sharp or strange.

  • MY EYEZ~! You bastards ruined my beautiful Lucky Star girls! *grabs pitchfork & stick with flame on it* Just kidding. Honestly, I prefer a little bit of thickness in my IRL chicks and my anime characters (studio Xebec).

  • Almost forgot, unfortunately I can only remember seeing one main character with extreme proportions of our cute “lil'” duo up here. And he was a guy. Watch Paprika and see if he got a good ending. R.I.P. Satoshi Kon

  • Kajan

I do have a “fat fetish”

  • Kajan

More so, not as fat as the girls in the image, but I do like skinny girls (majorty of my girlfriends are very skinny) and the rest were chubby (not fat, jussst chubby)

I think that girls have more weight in the face (which is usually about the average as well) are often easier on the eyes.

I secretly wanted to do a J-Drama discussion for several months now, but I liked. I guess I was so hesitant, because I do not know how many of you really gave J-drama to try again – you’re a fool if you do not, by the way.

I think the problem is simply stated in the above pictures.

chubby/fat girls can be very sexy… unless they try to pretend they are not chubby. Work with what you are, don’t try to ignore its existence. I see so many chubby girls that could be gloriously cute and attractive, except they try to fit into things their asses can’t be contained within.
