Otaku Debate: Did the Summer Anime Season Suck?

Surprisingly, last week's debate didn't generate the knee-jerk negative reaction towards obesity that I expected. Most of the poll respondents said they preferred their girls anywhere from "meaty" to "slightly chubby," which could be considered average weight for most people. It's nice to see our readers have rejected the "thin = sexy" message of pop culture and formed more realistic standards of beauty!

This week's topic is a bit of a painful one for me. In my humble opinion, this anime season has been a total letdown. Most of the shows, such as Seitokai Yakuindomo and Ookami-san, were just too bland to be worthwhile... and the few that showed promise, like Occult Academy and Highschool of the Dead, turned out to be total duds. The only show that's marginally entertaining at this point is Mitsudomoe, but the very risque humor makes it appealing to only a small subset of otaku.

Now, I don't think this means anime is doomed or anything silly like that. We've had bad seasons before, particularly in the early nineties after the last economic crash. Still, that doesn't make it any less depressing to slog through such mediocrity. Has this season left you in a similar state of despair? Or do you think that I'm being overly negative? Are there any anime this season you did enjoy, or are you taking refuge in old classics like Dirty Pair and Gundam while this storm blows over? Vote in the poll below, and share your thoughts in the comment section!

(Just FYI: I consider K-ON!! to be a spring season show, so it doesn't figure into this debate.)

  • Sad thing is I still watched Seitokai and there’s still another ep left I believe…

    • Kei

      Why must you torture yourself?

  • I have to agree that this season wasn’t as exciting as I hoped it would be;

    However, there were some diamonds.

While Occult Academy began promising, the plot has too little structure. Still entertaining, though.
Ookami-san was more relaxing, but still had some good, exciting episodes.
Seitokai Yakuindomo was the show with the most ups and downs; some episodes just couldn’t keep me watching, while others were just great and made me laugh.
Digimon is still a huge letdown for this oldschool-digimon-fan over here. It just doesn’t live up to my expectations.

There are three shows I wouldn’t want to have missed!

    1.) Amagami SS
The first thing that got me hooked was the art. I instantly loved it. Character designs, backgrounds, light – even though episode 9 was kinda… weak in that point, the show still looks great.
The concept is pretty enjoyable, too. Granted, 4 episodes per girl might be too few, but it still has a nice pacing.
The characters seem well developed (loved Kaoru), it got some funny moments and the romance my ‘lonely heart’ is longing for xD

    2.) Asobi ni Iku yo!
    I love this Anime!
It’s one of the best comedy shows this year, and even though some will classify it as Harem, I really enjoy it.
The characters seem interesting, the art is sweet, the whole plot might be a bit slow, but you should keep in mind what the story is basically about:
Aliens who come to befriend Earth. It’s exactly what they do in the show.
I wouldn’t mind if this anime would get another season, in fact, I’d love that!

    3.) Shiki
This is the show which keeps me hooked; I find myself thinking about what might happen next, what might really happen right now, how things are connected etc.
It’s exciting, and I try to avoid watching it not at night.
This is the only show where I’m wondering if the main characters really save the village or die as well.
There’s no real comedy here, the art is fairly unique, but the plot seems well-structured and exciting.

    Best show of the Season.

Spring brainy season (yay!) followed by summer snore season. Fall season will be…?

  • Didn’t watch any shows from this season because I already knew it was horrid.

    • clairvoyancy is a valuable skill.

    • clairvoyancy is a valuable skill.

  • It was okay I guess. I mean the only shows that I really followed were Highschool of the Dead, Mitsudomoe, K-ON!!, Shiki, and Ookami-san. Even then all those shows were just bland and kinda boring to watch. The only one that I remotely enjoyed watching was Mitsudomoe because it was hilarious.

  • The only show I had any real interest in this season was K-ON!! and as you rightly said that was a spring season show so that doesn’t count. I partly watched HoTD but that was just to humour it otherwise summer for me has been catching up on old shows I missed, some damn good ones too I might add. Perhaps my summer season hasn’t been as bad as everyone else’s in that respect.

  • In a word, ‘yes.’

  • Dliessmgg

Watch AsoIku, dammit! It’s the best show of the season!

    • Kei

The first episode put me to sleep. Did it get better from there?

      • Dliessmgg

If the end of episode two doesn’t make you want to watch more, I can’t help you.

  • The fact that the only shows from this season I even tried were Highschool of the Dead and Strike Witches 2 (that’s right I’m a fan, suck it) is a sign. I honestly considered skipping the summer season completely. I was hoping to wait and see how the reviews for the season turned out, but besides Mitsudomoe I don’t think anything has panned out. This season will probably be remembered as a forgettable one. But most of these shows are ending soon so maybe their ending will make them memorable.

I thought the 2010 Summer season was good, with shows like Strike Witches 2 and Amagami SS having quality episode every week. Even eroge adaption like Shukufuku no Campanella is turning out much better than expected. But then it just comes down to personal taste in judging if an anime series, or anything else, to be an epic or a trainwreck.

  • Who shall bring me hope that the next season is any better?

  • Who shall bring me hope that the next season is any better?

  • The Dark Prince

I think that it was a good season. I say this because there were only two shows I watched, those being Highschool of the dead and Shiki. Looking back on previous season, there tends to be only one or two shows I watch. So as long as the quota is met, it is a good season. Looking back I would say the winter anime season was the worst as there was only one good show, Cobra.

  • Setre

Of the shows I’ve watched I’ve enjoyed all of them. Shiki is becoming one of my favorite horror anime with its heavy atmosphere and some genuinely creepy scenes. Particularly one with Megumi. As for Amagami SS it tugs at my heart-strings and gives each of the heroines their own time to shine. Some might complain the arcs are to short but I like them at 4 episodes a piece. The reason I’m enjoying Asobi ni iku yo as much as I am is due to the fact that it does have a plot. Sure it’s mostly a harem, and I do enjoy those parts, but the overall plot is what interest me the most.

  • impatience to wait for season 2 of mitsudomoe anime ^_^

  • radren

to be honest…yes, some of them are cool though like dagan ronpa, etc. and IMO the spring or previous season was better ._.
