Bakacast #259 – The Shirt Sleeve Paradox

Seriously, though. How DO they get dressed?

By the time you’re reading this, I will already be on my vacation, far away from anime. How is this possible? Through the power of delayed publishing. God bless you, software developers. In any case, Dragon Ball Super reminds us that some characters should just be forgotten about (and that the English dub is way better), Ranpo Kitan completely fails at the “mystery” part of a murder mystery, Shimoneta ends with an exciting twist, Gatchaman Crowds ends with an infuriating twist, and God Eater moves so slowly that it forces Aaron and me to come up with ludicrous theories to keep ourselves entertained.

Kids love it.

On this episode of Bakacast, we may have watched too many shows. In fact, we’re gonna start having to make some cuts here. This current state of affairs is just ridiculous. From now on, I’m going to judge shows based on whether or not I’d rather watch Vegeta be a grumpy dad. If I’d rather watch Vegeta, I should just drop that dang thing.

You’re the best, Al.

JoJo’s marks our first show of the season to have it’s finale, and we can only hope that the rest of the shows we like end on just as high a note. Blood Blockade might do it, but Fate/Stay Night ain’t lookin’ too hot right about now. Even Yamada-kun is stumbling at the finish line.

Is this what sex is like?

This week on Bakacast, I actually remember to record it. So that’s helpful. In anime news, though, Larry gets back on board with JoJo’s, Aaron and I attempt to puzzle out exactly how stupid Shirou is, Sidonia really gets its money’s worth out of that squeaky-toy sound effect, and Kick Heart delights us. Well, most of us.

Oh, and we go through the shows we have to look forward to in the summer season. The verdict? A big ol’ shrug of our shoulders. Seriously, outside of, like, two shows, we have no idea how solid next season’s gonna be.

Unknown to brevity, nor known to pacing.

I chose the image for this episode largely because I like seeing Shinji in physical distress, which happens to be the only satisfying thing about F/SN right now. Thankfully, JoJo is finally out of the doldrums and back to being ridiculous in an entertaining way. Punch Line surprises us by finally showing us its true power level (and revealing something about its main character that I really hope I have the correct interpretation of, because it’d be really cool). Nanoha Vivid, however, has started to make me feel uncomfortable while watching it. And Paranoia Agent finishes by leaving us somewhat baffled and mildly unsatisfied.

No one’s punched their dad yet, but there’s plenty of episodes left for that.

On this week’s episode, we lament JoJo’s interminable pacing, finally learn when Shirou and Rin get it on, have a lot of fun saying “Dog Hummer,” and reveal that I have–in fact–been watching Hunter x Hunter again. I even talk about how crazy it is when that one muscle guy bites the leech dude’s skull off. Now stop bugging me about it.

Yep, even the monster woman. Pretty sure Wicked City did that.

So Luke finally got around to watching Isuca, which he colorfully described as a “gas chamber.” Which I guess means he liked it? Yeah, that’s how metaphors work. By the end of his segment, I felt a little bad about what I did, so I gave him a much easier assignment for next time: Triage X. I’m a good friend.

In other news, we find that Nanoha Vivid is much better at being shounen than it is at being slice-of-life, Blood Blockade vampires are way better than most vampires these days, and Yamada-kun might secretly be the best rom-com this season.

Bakacast #244 – The Disappearance of Good Shows

At least recording a podcast won’t feel like running a marathon now.

Now, I know what you’re going to say. “Dustin, did you really expect some of these shows on your list to be good?” No, of course I didn’t. But I was also hoping that some of the less-obvious-stinkers would be, well, slightly above mediocre. Or at least not insulting. So hey, hats off to Shokugeki no Souma and Denpa Kyoushi for failing to clear my low expectations even harder than I thought they would. That was a hell of an achievement.

On the plus side, Kekkai Sensen is everything I hoped it would be and more. So yeah, just watch that show, I guess. Everything else is superfluous.

Bakacast #242 – I Like You Better When You’re a Murderer

bakamurderer

Especially when you’re murdering people with a sword.

On this episode, our load finally lightens a bit as Yona and Parasyte have their season and series finales, respectively. If there’s any justice in the world, Yona will get another season. Also, Luke reviews Gundam Build Fighters Try, which he didn’t watch many episodes of simply because he didn’t feel it deserved to be mocked very much. So…I guess all you people who kept talking about Build Fighters weren’t just crazy. Let no one say I’m not willing to admit when I’m wrong.

Unless you’re dissing Tari Tari. That show was pretty good, and I don’t care what anyone else says.

Also, I’m certain we reviewed Yuri Kuma 11, but even after listening to the podcast to edit it I have no idea where our review of it actually is. So yeah. It’s somewhere in there, probably.

Yatterman Night has the best background characters of the season.

On this episode of Bakacast, Luke returns to talk about D-Girls (no, not that kind of “D”), and I review shows more harshly than I probably would have if I were actually feeling well. Turns out that I just can’t put up with Yuri Kuma when I’m sick and exhausted. At least I can keep up with Durarara, though. God knows why.

Also, for those of you wondering why Megan suddenly vanished about halfway through the podcast, don’t worry. She just decided to lie down for a bit while we were discussing shows she wasn’t watching and then promptly fell asleep. It was probably the smarter idea, honestly.
