Bakacast #291 – Everything Is Sad Now

To be fair, it’s been moderately sad for a while.

On this final episode of the 2016 Winter season, we have a sudden upgrade in audio quality! If you’re wondering what brought this on, the answer is, “The much easier but lower quality method we were using previously no longer reliably works with Skype.” So now everyone is individually recording their audio tracks in Audacity, and I’m stitching it all together. Hopefully this will end up making the podcast nicer to listen to.

They know that we know that they know.

Normally this is where I’d try to put something even halfway informative about what happens in this recording, but I’m about to go to work and have two more of these to edit and post anyway; so I’m guessing y’all won’t mind if just don’t bother.

The kawaii was made flesh and dwelt among us.

On this episode of Bakacast, we finally wrap up of the remains of the summer season. Which means I finally get to release the full force of my wrath against Gatchaman Insight. If you’ve been waiting for one of my old-fashioned impassioned rants, this is the episode for you. Also, we finally have some listener questions to answer! From Mark! Which means they take up over half the episode! It’s so nostalgic.

Also, here’s FathomlessBlue’s writeup on Gatchaman Crowds Insight, which you should probably read.

Now to try not to think about the fact that we won’t be getting any more Mushishi, but will be getting a million more light novel adaptations.

On this episode of Bakacast, we finish off most of the series that aired this season. And just like the season as a whole, the ratings for this week are another mixed bag. Next week, we’ll be catching up on the last episodes of Gatchaman and Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold to see if they ended on high notes.

Knowing it’s coming doesn’t make it easier.

Well, Flag is finally done, and I hope those who followed along with us enjoyed it as much as we did. Especially since there’s not a whole lot else this season to be particularly stoked about. One of these days, Dragon Ball will become interesting.

One of these days.

Also, if you haven’t done so already, vote in our poll to decide our next retro review.

As if the Durarara police ever accomplish anything.

Well, this week was…suboptimal. Durarara and Flag continue to be solid, but Arslan, Ushio, Gatchaman and God Eater all ended up being disappointing in some form or another. To be fair to Arslan, though, at least it ain’t Gatchaman.

Cute sheep are more important than mecha.

On this episode of Bakacast, Dragon Ball bores us, Durarara narrowly avoids sending me on a grief-induced rampage, Shimoneta continues beating a long-dead horse, and God Eater goes full grim-dark.

Also, I set up a poll where you can vote on which retro review we’ll do next. So go do that. You know, if you want to.

What if we made “Fast and the Furious” into an anime card game?

Hello, everyone! I’m sick! Not, like, in a perverted sense (though that’s probably accurate), but a “where is all this mucus coming from” sense. If the next episode of the podcast doesn’t get uploaded shortly after this one, I’ve probably drowned in a sea of my own sinus drainage. If that comes to pass, please tell Larry I loved him.

You can all thank/send hate mail to Larry for this pun. Truly, he has reached peak dad-joke.

Hello, listeners. Have you ever wondered which mythical creature Luke and I would most want to have sex/enter a committed relationship with? Well today’s your lucky day, because we review Monster Musume. And…we’re actually fairly positive about it. After that, it’s time for a two-hour marathon as we get through the ridiculous amount of shows that aired while I was on vacation. I am truly sorry.

Seriously, though. How DO they get dressed?

By the time you’re reading this, I will already be on my vacation, far away from anime. How is this possible? Through the power of delayed publishing. God bless you, software developers. In any case, Dragon Ball Super reminds us that some characters should just be forgotten about (and that the English dub is way better), Ranpo Kitan completely fails at the “mystery” part of a murder mystery, Shimoneta ends with an exciting twist, Gatchaman Crowds ends with an infuriating twist, and God Eater moves so slowly that it forces Aaron and me to come up with ludicrous theories to keep ourselves entertained.
