Haruhi’s Blu-ray Appearance Doesn’t Come Cheap

As reported by Sankaku Complex [NSFW], pre-orders for the October 22 release of the complete Haruhi TV series on Blu-ray have recently gone up on Amazon Japan. With all twenty-eight episodes of Haruhi in high-definition, extra content and English subtitles, it may seem like this is the release fans are waiting for.

But then there's the price: 30,000 yen (or $338 USD). For eight Blu-ray discs.

The Project Haruhi staff has talked about Japan's absurd pricing structure multiple times, but it bears repeating. What the heck are they thinking? Here's a short list of other stuff you could buy from Amazon Japan for that amount of money:

Okay, you probably get my point.

What makes this frustrating is the actual release is great. It's something I might like to own, and I'm not even that big of a Haruhi fan. The price, however, kills it for me. The even crazier thing is that, compared to the price of the DVD release of Endless Eight, this Blu-ray release is actually a bargain. Collecting the single-volume release of Endless Eight on DVD would cost the equivalent of $288 USD.

So, now the question is: how many people will actually buy the Blu-ray series? And if it sells poorly, will Kadokawa interpret this as disinterest in the Haruhi franchise instead of a rebellion against outlandish pricing?

About Dustin

Dustin (aka Stilts) enjoys playing and yelling at video games, especially RPGs. He also likes super robot shows… the more outrageous the plot, the better!

Ho. Ly. S***. I am NOT PAYING 330 F***ING DOLLARS for anime I can get online for free! I mean really!

That price actually isn’t that bad. Compare Bakemonogatari, whose Blu-rays are hovering around ¥5500-¥6500 for two episodes a piece to Haruhi’s relative pittance of ¥2109 for every two episodes, and it looks like a much better deal, ne?

Actually, this Blu-Ray box set is already at #1 for all DVD’s (not just anime) on Amazon.jp right now. And to be honest, I’m not really surprised. This is an absolute bargain in terms of Japanese anime DVD pricing. For comparison, here are the prices at MSRP for the DVD’s of Haruhi and some other shows on Blu-Ray by kyoani.

    Haruhi 2006: 48800 yen
    Haruhi 2009: 48800 yen
    Kanon Blu-ray: 59600 yen
    Clannad Blu-ray: 59600 yen

    Haruhi Blu-ray: 38000 yen

I have actually already pre-ordered myself a copy on Amazon, despite the fact that I already own the entire R2 DVD set. Admittedly I’m a big Haruhi fan, and this is just a can’t miss release, especially with that price.

  • And what about those of us who DON’T have hundreds of dollars worth of disposable income, but still want to own Haruhi legally on Blu-ray? I guess we just don’t matter?

  • hissatsu

    Pretty much.

Haha, according to the Japanese companies, I guess not. Unfortunately, these high prices are a result of the way the late night anime market works in Japan right now. They try to recuperate the costs of making the series by selling at higher prices to fewer people. I would love if R2 DVD prices were cheaper, but this is just the way it is right now.

I’m by no means made of money (college student) but every once in a while I try to make the sacrifice to buy a series I really love, Haruhi being one of them. Hopefully Bandai will eventually release Haruhi on Blu-Ray at a more reasonable price, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

  • I do plan on getting this as well. I’ve got the R2 DVDs and the R1 DVDs either on hand or pre-ordered as well (except Gekisou since it was a horrible transfer to DVD and this should be much better).

If you want to own Haruhi legally on Blu-Ray and don’t want to purchase this set, contact your licensor and say “I want to buy Haruhi on Blu-Ray, will you please bring it over?” and support that licensor’s products so they will be able to bring it over. Get many people to buy it and of course they’ll bring it over.

Not only is bloo right when saying it’s the number 1 selling DVD/Blu-Ray on Amazon Japan, it’s been the number 1 selling DVD/Blu-ray every hour since the set was announced on 7/7 at 07:00 JST, so evidently it’s been priced right for the Japanese market.

  • I have very little extra spending money, and since I already have the R1 DVDs, I don’t own a Blu-Ray player, and I don’t mind having lesser quality for a cheaper price (will be buying the R1 DVDs of season 2 instead), I won’t be getting these. Maybe one day in the future when I have a Blu-Ray player and lots of money I will =P I don’t mind waiting for the price to drop or my financial situation to change – the DVDs aren’t going anywhere.
