Bakacast – Fire the Skirt Missiles

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

In an effort to prevent more episodes that are over two hours, we’re starting to unceremoniously drop shows that just haven’t been entertaining enough. This week, Hunter X Hunter, Phi Brain, BokuTomo and Un-Go got the axe. And based on this week’s reviews, Penguindrum and Guilty Crown may be joining them.

On a brighter note, Glen finally watched an episode of Persona 4 that he enjoyed, Ben-To defied all expectations and managed to get a unanimous five, Future Diary is making me a very happy fanboy by being one of the best shows this season, and Baccano shows off two of its best episodes back-to-back. Could this be yet another season where noitaminA block utterly fails us and the best shows are the ones that came out of left field?

Bakacast – Girls in Suits

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Jon and Karen were both too busy dealing with real life this week, so we brought Scamp–who writes one of our favorite blogs–to fill in for them. While this may seem like a daunting task, his soothing accent practically counts as one co-host all on its own.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to prepare for Glen’s internet provider to make his life a living hell. As I mention in the intro, if some reviews seem a little rushed or disjointed, that’s because Glen’s internet kept dropping him from the call, which made  keeping a coherent discussion going kind of difficult. Thankfully, we were able to reconvene on Wednesday to have a trouble-free recording of the Baccano and listener questions segments.

As for the anime this week, it’s a very good time to be me, since Baccano, Fate/Zero and Un-Go all featured women in suits. I’m glad that anime directors these days are accounting for my very specific tastes.

Bakacast – Anime Overload

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Oh dear God, someone save us from all these shows. We review so many of these blasted things that we skip every other extra segment (except our beloved listener questions) and speed through the reviews; yet we still get within a hair’s breadth of breaking the two-hour mark. And to add to our pain, almost none of them are particularly good. Though I suppose that’s our job, isn’t it? We suffer so you don’t have to.

Normally this is where I’d come up with some clever way to summarize the reviews we do, but I’d rather not create a run-on sentence that’s a whole paragraph. So have fun with all these timestamps, guys!

Bakacast – Behold the Power of Baccano

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

The beginning of the Fall 2011 season of anime also marks my return to pulling double-duty on this podcast as editor and cat wrangler main host. Unfortunately, my happiness over re-taking my rightful place as podcast king is tempered by a pretty lackluster week for anime. The quality of the finale of Hanasku Iroha is pretty typical of the show in general, Dantalian no Shoka doesn’t really have an ending, the second season of Squid Girl has us wondering what they did to the show we loved, and Fate/Zero really, really likes exposition dumps given to us by generic-looking protagonists standing in mostly vacant rooms. Exciting! At least we have the highly entertaining Baccano! and My Little Pony: Rescue from Midnight Castle (which was fun for all the wrong reasons) to fall back on.

Bakacast – LOVE ME!!

iTunes Direct Download RSS

Bakacast, hasshin!

We start off this episode by debating the role of ‘liberated sexuality’ versus feminism in American comics, then we take advantage of the lull in between seasons to get a couple of extra reviews in. First we discuss the psuedo-cyberpunk film Mardock Scramble: The First Compression, then the live-action adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato. After our regular anime reviews Dusty and Glen fangirl over the finale to My Little Pony‘s first season. Finally, a listener question from somebody named Instant Milk sparks off a discussion about the merits of flat chests versus jiggly boobs.

Note: I originally intended to use the Madoka Rap as the OP, but its lyrics are a bit too NSFW for the podcast. Listen to it here instead.

Bakacast – Game of Evangelions

iTunes Direct Download RSS

Y’know, as the end of each anime season rolls around, I grow a little wistful. While editing this podcast, I reflected on the many happy memories this season has brought me, mainly in the form of Bunny Drop. It’s certainly appropriate that a show so steeped in mono no aware would bring a tear to my eye at the prospect of its passing.

Anyway, on this episode of Bakacast, we bid a fond farewell to Steins;Gate and Bunny Drop, as well as a not-so-fond farewell to No. 6. Dusty tells us about his latest gaming experience, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and I shamelessly plug Game of Thrones and the Rebuild of Evangelion films. We also all have a good laugh at the total stupidity of Hot Topic’s shameful attempts at cosplay.

Jon is once again absent for this episode, which means it’s the perfect time for all of us to praise Dantalian no Shoka and finally give it perfect scores. Other than that, it’s business as usual, with Hanasku making no sense, Steins;Gate leaving Larry utterly confused, Croisee and Bunny Drop being their cute selves, and No. 6 constantly being heavy-handed and dumb. Also, Penguindrum finally takes our advice and gives us an episode that’s entirely free of Ringo.

Thank God.

Finally, after our listener questions, I blatantly rip off War Rocket Ajax and introduce a very special segment called “Big Ups to All My Haters,” where I preform a dramatic reading of the comment of someone who got very mad about my final Highschool of the Dead review that is over a year old.

We cover:

I could start off this post with a bunch of poppycock about who appeared on the podcast and which news stories we covered and BLAH BLAH BLAH, but there’s really only one thing you care about.

Yes, this is the podcast where we review Redline.

That single fact eclipses almost everything else because Redline is an absolutely amazing work of art, a must-see film. If you have not watched this masterpiece, do so now. Otherwise, enjoy our review and discussion of it.

Also, No. 6 sucks.

Bakacast – Hurricane Fight!

iTunes Direct Download RSS

Karen wasn’t able to appear on this podcast, as she was off bravely challenging the Hurricane Lord to a battle of wits and martial strength. As a result, we delayed our Redline review by one week. It will be on the next podcast, we promise! To make up for it, we cover a couple of mecha-related news stories and give an impromptu preview of what we’re looking forward to in the fall season. And, now that I’m back, I inevitably get in an argument with Dustin about Dalian’s merits (or lack therof) as a character.

Bakacast – Punch to the Face

iTunes Direct Download RSS

I apologize for the occasional audio glitches in this episode. Jon was too tired from his job to record, and I was at my parents’ house, so I had to use a five-year-old laptop to record this week’s podcast. I’ve done this a couple times before, but I guess the laptop chose this time to turn into cybernetic molasses. I was able to fix the desync issues that appeared, but there was nothing I could do about the “clipping” of sentences.

Anyway, we have a pretty normal review segment this week, with Hanasaku Iroha continuing to be a bizarre mixture of bad and good, Steins;Gate stumbling toward its ending, Sacred Seven defeating even my tolerance for Sunrise stupidity, Bunny Drop being amazing, No. 6 finally going somewhere with its plot, Dantalian having troubling implications about gender, and Penguindrum convincing some of my co-hosts to come over to my Anti-Ringo brigade.

Also we discuss the scientific method in relation to My Little Pony. Seriously.

We cover:

  • 2:51 – Hanasku Iroha #20
  • 7:06 – Steins;Gate #20
  • 14:38 – Sacred Seven #7
  • 18:57 – Ikoku Meiru no Croisee #7
  • 26:17 – Bunny Drop #7
  • 35:19 – No. 6 #7

  • 51:27 – Mawaru Penguindrum #6
  • 58:22 – My Little Pony #15 & 16
  • 1:12:38 – Listener questions

I actually did miss one listener question, so I’ll be sure to get to it on the next episode. Speaking of the next podcast, we’ll be reviewing the Madhouse film everyone’s been hyped for: Redline. So look forward to that.
