Even within a community as tight and niche as the anime fandom, there are certain subcategories of Japanophilia that cause even the average otaku to raise an eyebrow or two. Dolfie collecting is one, as well as having a soft spot for body pillows or yaoi; but the single most alienating fandom for many is the J-drama one. Often associated with tearjerker plots and a strong focus on handsome young men with abs, it is understandable that J-dramas are often categorized under ‘guilty pleasure’, even by fans. The main reason why I have never ventured into the realm of Japanese live-action, however, is that it’s not animated. One of the main reasons why I love anime is the fact that animation thrives on spikey blue hair, fluffy mascot characters and over-the-top humoristic quirks. The elements that make anime unique often have to do with the animation, which is why I never thought that being an anime fan would automatically make me a fan of any sort of televised entertainment from the land of the rising sun. Bakacast – Be My Dungeon Master

I’m finally back from my exile in Minnesota and watched three weeks worth of anime in just a few days, all so I could argue with Jon. Unfortunately, he had to be responsible and go to a job interview; so he’s escaped my vengeance this time. But soon, Jon. Soon, I will destroy you.
Karen’s back too, and we start off the podcast by giving her a chance to talk about her Otakon adventure, which was a bit of a mixed bag. Then we lead off the review segment by ripping the disappointing final Break Blade episode to shreds. As for our regularly scheduled reviews, Steins;Gate continues to not act like Steins;Gate, Double J botches its last chance, our predictions for Sacred Seven‘s trainwreck potential end up being scarily accurate, No. 6 completely wastes an episode, and I finally get the chance to release my pent up rage toward Ringo of Penguindrum.
We cover:
- 2:11 – Otakon
- 17:19 – Break Blade #6
- 32:12 – Steins;Gate #18
- 40:58 – Double J #5
- 45:28 – Sacred Seven #5
- 52:48 – Ikoku Meiru no Croisee #5
- 59:43 – Bunny Drop #5
- 1:06:04 – No. 6 #5
- 1:10:50 – Mawaru Penguindrum #5
- 1:19:47 – My Little Pony #11 & 12
- 1:29:55 – Listener questions
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to get through all the questions this time. So if we didn’t answer your question this episode, don’t worry. We’ll get to it eventually.

It’s the Bakacast Comeback Tour!
Any rumors of our death are grossly exaggerated. After going on hiatus last week due to most of our staff being on vacation, we’re back this week with a vengeance! Well, half a vengeance anyway, since Karen and Dustin were still unavailable. But Joris (aka Aquagaze) filled in for them, so that brings us up to a solid three-fourths of a vengeance… and I’m pretty sure the album art makes up for the rest.
1:15 – Steins;Gate 16 & 17
7:58 – Hanasku Iroha 16 & 17
13:43 – Double J 3 & 4

22:26 – Ikoku Meiru no Croisee 3 & 4
30:34 – Nyanpire 3 & 4 (DROPPED)
34:54 – Bunny Drop 3 & 4
42:53 – No. 6 3 & 4

It’s been seven hours and fifteen days (ten days but who is counting)
Since you took your podcast away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your podcast away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can watch my anime on a fancy tv
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
It’s been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong
I could load my Ipod with every podcast I see
But they’d only remind me of you
I went to the doctor n’guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said you should watch HOTD and Fractale too
But he’s a fool
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
All the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that listening to you baby was sometimes hard
But I’m willing to give it another try
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

Sorry I didn’t get to all the listener questions this week, but I felt the ones involving My Little Pony should be saved until Dustin and Karen returned.

Bonus Trivia: This episode of Bakacast was exactly 1:44:44 long. I’m sure that means something. Somebody call a numerologist!
God’s Memo Pad and the Joys of Licensed Theme Tunes
For these last few months, some people asked me what had happened to Aquagaze’s Anime Weekend. To that surprisingly large part of the anime fandom, I have one message: you are reading it right now. The name Aquagaze’s Anime Weekend has lived its best days. My anime watching and blogging is not limited to the weekend anymore, nor do I want to waste my time making more flashy logos and title cards. I’ve chosen to focus on my writing instead. Besides, I’ve grown tired of the admittedly arrogant practice of sticking my own name into the name of my blog. I’d much rather go with something original. If even Liam Gallagher does have a big enough ego to name his new band Liam Gallagher and the Inspiral Nuns, neither should I. Now do not act as if you don’t know who Liam Gallagher is. He sang the best anime OP of all time.
Of all time!
Aquagaze’s Summer Anime Guide, Part Two
The Summer Guide turned out a bit long, so I had to split the thing up in two parts. Here’s Part Two, where the fun really starts! We cover the two new noitaminA shows, Kami-sama No Memo-chou and Mawaru Penguindrum. As usual, since my opinion isn’t worth all that much, I get four more people to nuance it a bit.
Are you ready guys? Put your guns on!
Aquagaze’s Summer Anime Guide, Part One

It's summer, so let's stay inside all day and watch some anime!
The summer season is often associated with subpar anime, one-cour stuffing made by lesser studios, but this summer season is one hell of an exception. I found at least 8 shows I’m interested in and of course, I’m obliged to share my thoughts. However, because my opinion isn’t worth jack, I got some of my friends with higher standards to nuance it a bit.
Find out after the break!

BEHOLD! I, the mighty Jon, have returned from my hiatus and taken command of Bakacast once again! And just in time to review all the exciting new summer season anime!
Because of the sheer number of new anime we had to review, we skipped our usual introductory segments and went straight for the sweet stuff. Next week should be a lot less hectic though, since we’ve already dropped over half these shows.

Bakacast – Melodrama Meltdown
iTunes | Direct Download | RSS
The end of the spring season is finally here, and Karen and Larry join me to give it a swift kick out the door. Sadly, Glen could not be with us because he overslept was busy fighting alien invaders.
In any case, we were quite happy knowing we’d never have to watch X-Men, AnoHana, and Hanasku Iroha ever again. And yes, I know HanaIro didn’t technically end. A season finale is good enough for me. Steins;Gate is fantastic as always (if rather cruel), but [C] tragically fumbles its finale. Oh well. Maybe the two noitaminA shows coming out this summer will make up for the past four that have been on that block. And no matter what happens, we’ll at least have My Little Pony.
In the news segment, we briefly touch on the Thundercats remake and Warren Ellis’ involvement with the crummy Marvel adaptations. Then we answer a couple of listener questions and close out the episode discussing what summer shows we’ll be watching. Try and guess which one we’re checking out just to mock. It shouldn’t be too hard.
We cover:
- 2:08 – News
- Thundercats remake
- Warren Ellis on the Marvel anime (if you don’t know who this is, read FreakAngels [WARNING: Has strong language and occasional NSFW imagery])
- 10:48 – Soft Tennis #12
- 15:31 – Gosick #23
- 21:02 – X-Men #12
- 28:53 – Hanasaku Iroha #13
- 37:09 – Steins;Gate #13
- 43:21 – AnoHana #11
- 50:54 – [C] #11
- 1:03:02 – My Little Pony #5 & 6

Bakacast – Hate-chan’s Counterattack
iTunes | Direct Download | RSS
This week, we bring in Bakacast power-listener and Universal Century super-fan Hate-chan to help us discuss the Mobile Suit Gundam remake. Continuing the mecha theme, we then wonder how many people will actually be crazy enough to buy the phenomenally overpriced Evangelion wine.
Then, in the “Whatcha Been Doing?” segment, I talk for far too long about video games, as is customary. It’s about The Witcher 2, though, so at least it’s a game I enjoy this time.
In the reviews segment, we have our first “proper” review of Soft Tennis courtesy of Karen, Larry and Glen; Gosick makes us scratch our heads even more than it usually does; Steins;Gate ends with a literal bang; and [C] goes all Madoka Magica on us. Also, we begin our retroactive review of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic season one. Our conclusion? It really sucks to be an Earth Pony, and Princess Celestia is a troll.
We cover:
- 2:04 – News
- 20:29 – Whatcha Been Doing?
- 38:00 – Soft Tennis #10 & 11
- 45:28 – Gosick #22
- 51:59 – X-Men #11
- 59:21 – Hanasaku Iroha #12
- 1:06:15 – Steins;Gate #12
- 1:14:31 – AnoHana #10

Bakacast – Daddy;Issues

Karen got hit by a nasty cold and wasn’t feeling well enough to come on the podcast (how dare she prioritize her health over talking to some jerks about anime), so we asked frequent-guest Thomas to be our fourth host so we wouldn’t feel so lonely.
As usual, I use our “Whatcha Been Doin'” segment to talk about videogames, specifically Duke Nukem Forever and how terrible it is. Spoiler: it’s pretty terrible. We also bring back the news segment to discuss Zac Bertschy’s High School of the Dead review. Turns out it’s one of those rare gems that can actually be improved by the Manga Entertainment method of dubbing.
Speaking of things that are hilariously stupid, Glen, Thomas and I give our impressions on the episodes of Soft Tennis we managed to watch, pick apart X-Men, wonder how much more dumb Ohana of Hanasaku Iroha can possibly get, and console ourselves with the fact that AnoHana is almost over.
Also, we tackle the (not-so-anymore-)controversial question of what is anime, really?
We cover:
- 2:53 – Whatcha Been Doin’
- 11:21 – News stories
- 16:33 – Soft Tennis general impressions
- 23:56 – Gosick #21
- 30:46 – X-Men #10
- 35:44 – Hanasaku Iroha #11
- 44:01 – Steins;Gate #11
- 52:48 – AnoHana #9
- 59:14 – [C] #9
