Bakacast – Ne, Victorique!

Karen of The Otakusphere joins us again for this week’s episode and gives us what’s probably the only recap of Astarotte’s Toy we’ll ever hear (or pay attention to).

Since we’ve executed several shows over the last couple episodes, we bring back the “What have you been playing/reading/watching?” segment that I really should find a more clever and concise name for. Then we get right to our review segment, which includes one of the most miraculous events ever witnessed. No, it’s not the Rapture; you couldn’t download this podcast if that had actually happened. It was something even more unexpected: we give Gosick a perfect score.

Did I just blow your mind? No?

Well, then it’ll probably later get blown away when we discuss how bad Tiger & Bunny and AnoHana managed to be. I feel like you really have to work to come up with dialogue and plotlines that terrible.

Bakacast – The Dark Side of Yuri

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

We go back to basics on this episode of Bakacast with just Glen, Larry and me on hosting duties. We even bring back the poor, neglected news segment to look deep within ourselves and wonder if we would pay upwards of $150 to find a wife. The answer is a definitive “Probably not, but I won’t rule it out.”

Of course, we review some anime, too, finally freeing ourselves from the bondage of Battle Girls (it wasn’t even the fun, “let’s experiment” kind of bondage). Plus, Gosick proves it doesn’t even know how light works, Tiger & Bunny could be more accurately titled Bunny, Deadman Wonderland shows similar problems to Highschool of the Dead (but without any of the “entertaining” parts), and Steins;Gate once again saves the week.

We cover:

  • 2:06OtaRen, the otaku dating service
  • 11:33 Gosick #17
  • 21:52Tiger & Bunny #7 (the comic was actually from PvP, not Shortpacked; sorry, Scott Kurtz!)
  • 30:26 Hanasaku Iroha #7
  • 37:28Battle Girls #7 (dropped)
  • 44:42Steins;Gate #7
  • 52:20AnoHana #5
  • 57:21Deadman Wonderland #5 (dropped)

Bakacast – Three Angry Men

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

This week’s episode marks the first time in a while that Bakacast has actually made it under an hour and a half. Frankly, I’m stunned and kind of hope this trend continues. It helps that we’ve trimmed down our list so it only includes three shows that we’re watching purely for masochistic purposes. The others are either genuinely good or showed early promise and are now suffering from an acute case of Occult Academy syndrome.

I’m looking at you Tiger & Bunny.

Frequent guest-host Thomas fills in Jon’s vacant fourth slot this week and, in a daring move, gives Battle Girls the highest score its gotten since the first episode. As stunned as I was (and still am), I admit it’s hard to argue with an episode that gives me 100% more Nobunaga (aka the only good thing about the show). But Glen, Larry and I being who we are, we find plenty of ways to argue about it anyway. Because we’re mean like that.

We cover:

  • 2:09Gosick #16
  • 11:27Tiger & Bunny #6
  • 19:33Hanasaku Iroha #6
  • 25:56Battle Girls #6
  • 34:43Steins;Gate #6 (it seems appropriate that this show gets a palindrome for its time stamp)
  • 43:46 – Dat Flower–er…AnoHana #4
  • 52:17Deadman Wonderland #4
  • 1:00:30[C] #4
  • 1:10:06 – Listener question

Bakacast – Worst Birthday Present Ever

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

On our very special 50th episode of Bakacast, we bring on The Otakusphere’s Karen–formerly of Japanator–to talk about Amazon taking some yaoi titles off their Kindle store, how terrible the recent Parasite Eve game, The 3rd Birthday, is (pretty terrible), and if she’s watched My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Besides checking out her blog, which I highly recommend, you can also follow her on Twitter. And if you’d like a little history lesson, you can check out the last podcast Karen and I were on right here [WARNING: Unlike this podcast, Japanator AM lets F-bombs run free].

I guess we review some anime too. Gosick gives us a plot dump, Hanasaku Iroha continues to confound us, Steins;Gate continues to entertain us, Deadman Wonderland can’t figure out what tone it wants, and Blue Exorcist is just sorta there. Meanwhile, Glen starts exercising his psychic powers to properly use the new mind-reading cat ears.

We cover:

  • 04:28 – Amazon removes some yaoi titles from Kindle
  • 08:19 – The 3rd Birthday
  • 22:51 – Gosick #15
  • 29:59 – Tiger & Bunny #5
  • 33:52 – Hanasaku Iroha #5
  • 42:57 – Battle Girls #5
  • 51:16 – Steins;Gate #5
  • 59:11 – Blue Exorcist #3 (dropped)
  • 1:05:21 – AnoHana #3
  • 1:13:24 – Deadman Wonderland #3
  • 1:17:49 – [C] #3
  • 1:25:02 – Listener questions

Bakacast – Human Gel Banana

On this episode of Bakacast, we bring one of our good friends, Jared, on as a guest. You can follow him on Twitter at @Escap3st.

Despite dropping some shows, we’ve still got a lot to get through. And, of course, we have to talk about Madoka Magica. Thankfully, the greatness of the finale seems to have infected some of the other shows this season, as OreImo, Tiger & Bunny, Steins;Gate, [C] and AnoHana all get Bakacast seals of approval (NOTE: we do not have actual seals). The rest?

Well…not so much.

Thankfully, we have just enough time left to answer a couple e-mails about OPs and EDs we like and if we should try getting Larry on a hypothetical second season of America’s Greatest Otaku.

We cover:

  • 2:29Madoka Magica finale
  • 12:06OreImo #14
  • 18:18Gosick #14
  • 26:34X-Men #4
  • 34:28Tiger & Bunny #4
  • 41:05Hanasaku Iroha #4
  • 51:49Battle Girls #4
  • 57:23Steins;Gate #4
  • 1:04:43A-Channel #3 (dropped)
  • 1:07:20[C] #2

Bakacast – I Want to Sparkle

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

I’m sorry these podcasts keep coming out late, but my spring semester is almost over and the work is piling up. I’ll be editing and posting episodes much quicker after the first week of May. And hopefully Jon will be caught up on anime around that time so he return to his regular hosting duties.

In the meantime, we brought Scamp, writer of the Cart Driver blog, on as a guest host this week. Marvel at his soothing Irish voice as he explains exactly why no one should ever watch Apocalypse Zero. Also, this marks the first week we finally decide to drop some shows. Because watching and talking about over a dozen shows each week is kind of tiring.

We cover:

  • 3:08 Gosick #13
  • 7:11Suite PreCure #10
  • 9:27X-Men #3
  • 14:01Nichijou #3 (dropped)
  • 21:29Tiger & Bunny #3
  • 26:06 Hanasaku Iroha #3
  • 35:59Battle Girls #3
  • 40:39Steins;Gate #3
  • 46:22Sket Dance #3 (dropped)
  • 50:55A-Channel #2
  • 53:20Blue Exorcist #1
  • 59:27Aria of Scarlet Ammo #1 (dropped)
  • 1:10:56AnoHana #1
  • 1:21:05Deadman Wonderland #1
  • 1:30:00 – Listener question

You’ve probably noticed that the second episode of C and the finale of Madoka are not on that list. That’s because those episodes aired after we were done recording (Madoka actually aired a mere two hours after). We’ll talk about them in the next episode, I promise.

Bakacast – Punch It in the Gun

Jon is absent again this week, but that’s okay. We kidnapped Thomas to help us talk about the second week of the spring season, where we still managed to miss a couple shows (Aria of the Scarlet Ammo, for instance, was released by gg two hours before before we started recording).  Somehow, even with over a dozen shows to talk about and a news section, we managed to keep this podcast under two hours. I think we might finally be getting decent at this whole reviewing thing.

We cover:

  • 2:47FUNimation licenses Panty & Stocking
  • 5:03The gg karaoke party (I’m singing on the far left, koda’s right next to me with the mic)
  • 7:47 Gosick #12
  • 14:13Suite PreCure #8 & #9
  • 18:45X-Men #2
  • 23:12 Nichijou #2
  • 28:28Tiger & Bunny #2
  • 32:57Hanasaku Iroha #2
  • 40:12Toriko #2 (dropped)
  • 45: 32Battle Girls #1 & #2
  • 53:03Steins;Gate #2
  • 1:00:45Sket Dance #2
  • 1:06:55A-Channel #1
  • 1:13:54 C: The Money of Soul #1
  • 1:19:59Macross Frontier #23, 24, 25
  • 1:33:56 – Listener question from Jon (you’ll want to click this link for context)

Bakacast – Winter Wrap Up

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Welcome to the last Bakacast of the winter season. It seems like only yesterday that we watched those first episodes, huh?

Jon wasn’t able to join us, so we kicked Fractale out the door, bid fond farewell to Wandering Son and Level E, and hosted our last Star Driver Love Party without him. We then start the first round of spring season reviews with a pretty respectable amount of anime. Expect the list, as always, to be cut in half by the time we figure out which shows we want to stick with.

And which shows we can convince each other to watch.

We cover:

  • 2:19Mass Effect animated film announced
  • 5:04Gosick #11
  • 8:37Level E #13
  • 11:22Fractale #11
  • 17:13Wandering Son #11
  • 22:11Star Driver #25
  • 29:49X-Men #1
  • 34:23Nichijou #1
  • 40:09Tiger and Bunny #1
  • 46:05Hanasaku Iroha #1
  • 54:47Steins;Gate #1
  • 1:00:49Sket Dance
  • 1:09:32Macross Frontier #21 & #22
  • 1:18:06 – Listener questions

All you bronies out there should appreciate the songs I chose for this episode.

Bakacast of the Daleks

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

Beware! Bakacast (and Paul “Otaking” Johnson) has fallen to the Daleks! I managed to hack into Project Haruhi with my sonic screwdriver just long enough to get this episode out.

If anyone is out there, if anyone can help, please, destroy this robotic-trash-can menace before it’s too late. If they succeed, Level E won’t get a chance to pull itself from its quagmire. Star Driver will never get the fabulous ending it deserves. And, most importantly, we won’t be able to mercilessly mock Fractale anymore.

So if you happen to know any time travelers with British accents or an immortal, omnisexual leader of a secret group of alien hunters, send them our way. We could use the help.

On this episode, we cover:

  • 2:30 – What we’ve been watching/playing
  • 12:35 – “Yu-Gi-Oh!” creator sues 4Kids
  • 18:44 – OreImo #13
  • 25:03 – Level E #12
  • 29:31 – Fractale #10
  • 35:34 – Wandering Son #10
  • 44:03 – Star Driver #24
  • 50:18 – Suite PreCure #7
  • 53:34 – Macross Frontier #19 & #20

Bakacast – Sparking!!

iTunes Direct Download | RSS

This week on Bakacast, we try something new for our opening segment and talk about what we’ve been playing and/or watching during the past week. Which means that I finally get to talk about video games on my anime podcast. Glorious freedom!

Anyway, Madoka didn’t air and Gosick wasn’t subbed in time, so we took the opportunity to catch up with Break Blade, fall asleep during Nichijou and discuss a K-On! doujin (yes, really). In other news, the Fractale hate train keeps rolling, the Star Driver love party returns and we give our advice for how you–YES, YOU!–can be Internet-famous podcasters (DISCLAIMER: May not actually make you Internet-famous).

We cover:

  • 2:27 – What we’ve been watching/playing
  • 15:27 – FUNimation backpedals
  • 21:22 – Deconstructing K-On!
  • 29:18Nichijou #0
  • 35:25Break Blade #4
  • 43:12Level E #11

  • 59:01Star Driver #23
  • 1:07:01Suite PreCure #6
  • 1:11:06Macross Frontier #17 & #18
